Because the satin (or "worn") finish is cheaper to put on (not a lot of buffing out).

I don't like the worn finishes--they look and feel cheap--and they nick up too easily.

But if you like the way they play--it is one way to save some cash--But if I had one, I'd be tempted to refinish the neck.

Whatever the reason, I must say I find Gibson's Faded series to be more tastefully done than Fender's Road Worn series. :?

'Bought a "Faded Brown" SG a couple years ago. Added chrome pup covers and good knobs and engraved truss rod cover and nice case. No nicks or machined-in wear, but 'be liking that real thin un-filled satin finish. Much. Very "naked" feeling guitar, a joy to play.

WHAT A HONEY OF A GUITAR! (In this picker's opinion, as it is now, it's what an American Standard would be if it was a Gibson.)

It seems that POSERS like to have WORN LOOKING GUITARS so it seems like they have been around for awhile..
Fir Gibson it was a way to sll SG"s and lowe end LESPAUL STUDIO"S for under 800.00 which

I like to relic mine the old school way

PLAY EM !!!!!!!

I did buy however an SG faded to experiment with and also picked up a LES PAUL BFG when they first came out.
For 800.000I got a CARVED OUT PAUL which just began a year a go, with a P-90 in the neck and a BURST BUCKER PRO 3 in the bridge, which is the EXACT PUP as there CUSTOM SHOP 59er.
Sure no binding and a matte finish but stillI bought it for TONE like any guitar should be bought.

It sounds great and after a bout 100.00 in extra;s like creame knobs, and trims rings, nice strap and truss rod cover I have been offered 1500.00 for it....then i took it to the IRRIDIUM about a year or so ago and got LES PAUL to sign it and now it';s worth 2500.00 as are the ones GIBSON sells with LES"s autograph on them

I LOVE MY TELES but play mostly Gibson;s except for AMP ALL FENDERS, this is mainly due to the versatility and different models offered by Gibson but for the TELE well IMO it is the BEST GUITAR EVER MADE !!!!
Hence the reason why I have 21 of em now !!!!

I am not really BRAND CONSCIENCE if it has a DIFFERENT tone that will inspire me to write differently or give me a sounds I don;t have with any other of my 30+ ax's then I'll buy it but then I do this for a living...when not with the band I play as a HIRED GUN in the studio and play for anyone who'llpay me.......
HEY at least I can make a GREAT living doing what I love.

But why guys like beat up looking guitars I think is just a POSER MOVE...you can get the same sounds even better with OLDER WOOD and the right pups caps and amp !!!
I like having 20 yo guitars that look new....they take care of me so I take care of them....

Respect your instrument and it will be there for you when you need it to !!

just my opinion.....but also Gibson doesn't really make a relic they have there VOS is what nickle and there tops really looked like in the 50-and 60's,,they were never FLAMED and most were a drab finish with plain tops only in the 90;s did the 5A ELEGANT' S START and having matched FLAME TOPS personally I LOVE my ORIGINAL 59 with NO FLAME and it's faded look.( and it 's VALUE!!!!)

The faded SG's were basically the way the SPECIALS and TV WHITES AND YELLOWS looked back when they were first made it was to make the guitar come up a different color other than BLACK OR WHEN TV,,,,hence the name TV WHITE !!!!

If ya notice when Gibson put out a WORN looking ax like the ALVIN LEE 335 they do not put the stickers on it they give em to ya and leave it up to you.

Though it seems FENDER has pulled it off when the ROAD WORNS came out they could NOT keep em n stock and even now when they get 10 in they are GONE within 2 weeks so some one likes em.,...

From what I have been told most buyers are ages 17-24......they sounds and look great but a grand for a beat up MIM.....I'll buy a new one and wear it in myself.
Sorry if I got repeditive.

james

If I am spending a grand on a guitar it surely is NOT gonna be ROAD WORN TELE made in MEXICO ...I want it new and it will get worn from playing......though I'll admit they sound good but that;'s in the pups and electronics not the wood or looks

Just my opinion

stjames

Gibson is now far away behind Fender and try to recover the distance; but the Danish Owner wants to cut the costs.

Had my '65 Sunburst Firebird 3 overhauled by Gibson earlier this year, a keeper for sure. John.E

The case. The Worn finish Gibson V and SG come w/ a gig bag. All the other come w/ HSC. Yes the finish causes a little bit of a price difference but it is mostly the case. There is a $100 difference between the standard explorer and the wron finish explorer because the worn finish exp comes with a HSC.

That's total BS. Price point dictates many things including quality which Fender sorely lacks especially in the amp department.
I'm not saying Gibson's perfect, they've made some weird stuff too, but far away behind? The Raod Worns IMO are horribly fake looking and look mass produced, which they are anyway. They're like the pre-worn jeans. All worn in almost the exact same way in the exact same place. What happens if two people in the same band have one? They'll look like the Bopsie Twins. LOL

At least Gibson didn't move there operation to Mexico and China to compete. Who's ahead of whom? I'd take a MIA Gibby Melody Maker over any MIM Strat. Just me though.

With these, Road Worns", I think that they will look rather silly on players after a few years once the market has been saturated with them. I say this due to the fact that they are all identically worn in all the identical places. It'll be kind of like a uniform.

And now for the obvious question: How does one grade them?

Mint = 100% OEM factory abused and no other abuse by the owner?

Etc, etc.

Grade them either S for stupid looking, F for fraudulent looking or just P for poser.
And let not forget how far and away Fender is from Gibson. I guess they are in the hype and people who believe it department. LOL
