Are you rich or poor?

Lots of options, fruity loops, cakewalk, audacity, soundforge.

There are a lot of DAWs , figure out what you want to do with it and go from there.

Reaper ($60) http://www.reaper.fm/, you would have to have some sort of audio capture device. I have a Edirol UA-4FX http://www.rolandus.com/products/productdetails.php?ProductId=758&ParentId=114 that I use with Reaper.

Audacity http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ is free, but lacks the plug-ins you get with Reaper, and neither one has drums. I just got 'Drumcore' ver 2 http://submersiblemusic.com/TemplateMain.aspx?contentId=7 on close-out from Sam Ash for $79!

I have a BOSS BR-600 & BR1600 that I mainly record with, I only got Reaper just to learn PC recording. I still think that arranging drum in a PC based DAW is a PITA compared with the BR recorders.

Jonesy... The device Thouston spoke about now has a Cakewalk logo on it. But, it is the same device. I guess because Cakewalk is part of Roland now. It comes with a copy of Sonar LE, you could give that a try to see if you like it. I use Sonar Home Studio (for now). I like the way it's set up. The funny thing is, despite all the features the DAW has I still use it like a simple tape machine.

I just went all through this stuff. Since I didn't need Midi, I went with a M-Audio Delta 44, which is a sound card with a break out box. I also needed a Mic Pre Amp. I went that way because I wasn't having luck with USB. But, most people do.

Anyway, whatever you get do your homework first. Most companies have forums like this one. You can see how much trouble other folks are having. Unlike guitars, you can't try this stuff out before you buy. It's good that you can borrow one first.

I have a br600 which is good for live recordings and putting down ideas for songs and practicing your playing but nothing beats computer recording.
I use ableton live and go through a line 6 ux2 audio interface. Go to myspace.com/eccentric0 and see what you think.
I would personally recommend this as when you export files from a br600 the files are slightly off from the drums you may have played with on your computer or from a live recording, which is a major pain in the $@! when lining everything up so it sounds right.

That doesn't happen with the recordings I do with my BR-600, mainly because I mix, master and bounce the tracks as a stereo pair.

If the tracks you uploaded are off in timing, it's because you didn't line up the tracks right at the '0' point.

If I record with Reaper, I do all the recording in the software. I have BOSS DR-5 that I've used with Reaper, but it's still a PITA to insert drums IMO.

Windows sound recorder is the easiest.

Audacity is easy too and gives you more flexibility as a newcomer.

Here is a list of links to free stuff for recording :

Best VST Dynamic Processor

Blockfish for vocals, endorfin for full mix. They don't have the nice waveform visual that many plugs have, but I like the sound of them. Very good manuals as well.

http://www.digitalfishphones.com/

Best VST Reverb

Free convolution/impulse based verb. Very realistic tones.

http://www.knufinke.de/sir/index_en.html

Best VST Amp Sim

Voxengo Boogex

Good sim mixed with convolution modeled cab/mic/verb.

http://www.voxengo.com/downloads/?hi...=boogex#boogex

Best Free DirectX Audio Suite

Blue-Line Plugs. I downloaded this one years ago. As far as free DirectX, this is about it. The website state "Now discontinued but still available for download". Complete suite including multi tap delay, compressor, filter, stereo enhancment, etc

http://www.digilogue.de/

Best Source for Free Soundfonts

HammerSound. Lot of garbage here too, but some good can be found. Using creative's vienna editor, you can strip the samples out to use with whatever softsyth you prefer.

http://www.hammersound.net/

And Finally, the Best Overall Source for free stuff

You can find a plethora of free stuff here.

My Son is enjoying his Sonar Home Studio XL that I just hooked up on his PC for him along with a M-Audio interface. Tthe only thing he forgot to get was his own mic so he ran out and picked one up tonight that does not sound bad for 100.00 its a Sterling mic:D
