Just read some reviews of this movie, due to be released in my neck of the woods on August 28th. Jimmy Page, The Edge, Jack White - three extremely talented guitarists (well, the Edge may not be a guitar virtuoso but his sound is unique and amazing). Can't wait - looks like the sort of movie to reignite one's enthusiasm for the guitar...

i wouldn't say Jack White is talented. I mean really Jimmy Page and the Edge are awesome. But Jack White? They couldn't find anybody better? Like Frampton or Townshend or Clapton? But I'll check this movie out.

I agree that Jack White wouldn't have been my first choice, but I think he was kind of the driving force behind getting this movie made. I am very interested in seeing this! 8)

Is this movie wide release or major cities...or is direct to DVD? Just wondering...as I'd like to check it out as well! :D

I expect we can all debate the relative merits of the 3 guitarists in the movie - but I think we can all agree they have 3 quite different sounds and it will be interesting to see the contrasts in their influences and how their 'signature' sounds evolved...

I'd /LOVE/ to see this movie, but I'm very sad to see that it's not playing in a theatre in New Jersey. :(
I hope it comes out on DVD or something so I could buy it, or Mom takes me to New York to see it. :P

And the reason why they chose Jack White is because they wanted three generations of guitarists.
Just saying.

Sept 18 in Milwaukee, which is the closest to me. There was a cover story on this movie in Guitar World a few months back. Looks really interesting - please post if anyone sees it!

I won't pretend to know alot about Jack White, but the first time I saw him play live on TV I was impressed with what an excellent rock&roll performance he put on. If you like "raw" he's got it down! :D

I believe it was in the trailer for this movie that he makes the comment that he plays crappy guitars because he wants it to be a struggle to make music. In my book, that is what is commonly referred to as an "artistic stance" and I admire his dedication to his craft.

I disagree with that statement, there happen to be a lot of better guitarists than Jack White that are around today. Brad Paisley, Tom Morello, Dave Navarro, Keith Urban, Lenny Kravitz, and there are lots of others that are way better than White.

What songs best display Jack White's guitar playing abilities?

I'm going to get massacred for this, but I'm a big Jack White fan, the White Stripes in Sydney was one of the best, best live shows I ever saw, and I find him quite inspirational, a kind of conduit to the history of blues and folk music. I'm sure everyone will jump in now and tell me why I'm wrong.

And I have "Ball and Biscuit" in a playlist on my iPod, Guitarist1983, I think it's as good an intro to his sound as anything.

I'm also fascinated with the sound he gets in the intro to Steady as She Goes with the Ranconteurs.

We could argue forever about "best", but for me he's definitely a "favorite".

Well there you go. You are pointing out the difference in musical relevance and technical pyrotechnics. Jack White is an artist, not a spewer of way fast notes. :)
