Because I'm not willing to shell out $80 or more for an A/B/Y switch, I was wondering if it would be possible to use both the Boss TU-2 to split a guitar signal into two different amps. Could you run a cable from the "output" and "bypass" jacks to two amps safely? I understand that one signal won't be muted when you stomp the box...

No, it doesn't work like that, when you plug into the BYPASS jack, its to continue to hear your instrument as you tune. When you plug into the OUTPUT jack this will silence your instrument output as you tune.

But could you still hear yourself through two amps with the tuner off?

Sorry, I may not have been clear in what I was asking. What I wanted to know is whether you can safely use both outputs, bypass and output, simultaneously in order to run two separate amps. I've had my TU-2 for ages, and I know exactly how it works. I'm just wondering whether it's safe to run two amps at once -- making it a de facto signal splitter.

If you are good with a soldering iron, or want to learn, last time I looked you could get the parts to make your own true bypass ABY pedal for around $30...

Or for $30 you can get the AB/Y switch from Behringer. Not the best but beats making your own.

If you plan to do something like that, I would suggest implementing a FET switch to eliminate the *pop* that will imminently occur when you press that mechanical switch.
