I wonder what Fender uses?

All I'm saying is that some of these sound pretty darn good :

No knocking garage band as far as freeware goes, but for the average price difference between Mac and PC, for the same money you can buy a PC with the same performance specs and still buy
The top of the line Cakewalk
which in my opinion is much better(hence the $200 price tage,) or even Cubase 5 (Which is light years beyond garage band. And you would still have enough money left to buy a new (Mexican) Strat or Tele.

I use both ... Mac Mini (mostly) at home and a PC (laptop) for work projects at home. GarageBand is terrific but since I've decided to get into recording (for the first time in my 40+ years of playing), I got Pro Tools. There, Mac or PC would do equally well as long as the machine has the horsepower.

What I like about the Mac ... no reinstalls in 4 years and none needed. However, my PCs do almost as well and I like one other poster have never gotten a virus. I give the Mac an edge in terms of hangs though -- very rare -- though PCs have been much better since XP Pro.

PCs definitely have the freeware edge but Mac users should look into the UNIX layer under the Mac OS. There's a modest amount of freeware, some very professional level, for UNIX that will run on a Mac. I use Gimp for graphics work and in many respects its right up there with the best of the high end for money graphics tools.

So which is better? Neither really -- I give the ease of use edge to Mac and I find they're a bit more stable. But the cost and overall number of apps available goes to Windows. Overall use is obviously Windows though I do all my Excel and Word projects for work on Mac Office.

We have over 200 XP Pro based PCs at work and few of our employees are all that computer literate. Even so, we don't have all that many problems. Believe it or not, the one thing that keeps our PC tech running all day, ever day is ... Outlook. But that's a whole other story.

Maybe if you've been using one for awhile. I think the PC gets the ease of use edge. :?:

Mike that site gives the Red 'very poor reputation' warning on my web of trust add on. I wouldn't give any credence to anything written on a site with that poor of a security rating.

Video was funny though!

Are you running the firefox add-on? I have McAfee's site advisor and
got no such warning?

But, yeah, the video is hilarious!

Yeah its firefox add on.

There are so few sites i find that give the red warning, so I kind of stay away.

That said, from what I saw on the grayed out site while the warning came up, and noscript blocked something, I saw that he states that his site is designed for mac users. So I think he has an axe to grind. Both sides of the debate have some people who seem to have an almost religious fervor. Kind of reminds me of the fender/Gibson stuff that some wingnuts carry to huge extremes.

I will never bash the quality of Macs. they are fine machines, but I really think they are far from the best value. The average home user does nothing but send emails, and surf the web. For that a super cheap PC is more than fine.

If however you have specific tasks you do that go beyond that, then you need to evaluate which one does a better job for what you need.

The video there was probably done on a Mac. That is the one area they truly can excel at. I would say for audio recording there is not much difference between PC's and Mac's.

Pro Tools is probably the best program, it is certainly the industry standard. It runs equally well on either. Most of the midrange programs run on either machine, but Cakewalk I believe is only on PC, it is excellent. But Apple has Logic, which is also up there. For cheap there are so many alternatives for each. Garage band which is really the entry level of Logic is excellent, and bundled with a Mac. fun and pretty easy to use. but you could buy a similarly spec'ed PC and use on of the programs I mentioned in an above post. So really for us average Joes it preference.

But I still think a PC is a better value.

Excellent post Twelvebar, and I agree with all you've said.

This thread is only for the purpose of seeing which forum members are using which computers.

As far as browsers, I'm a die-hard firefox user and will find that add-on because it sounds helpful and like that it works with PCs and Macs. :)

As for Windoze, I'm guessing that Windows 7 (due for release around October 22nd) might be a good thing (after problematic Vista)?

Acer, who bought out Gateway, is offering some good deals right now on their desktops and laptops.

So, there are 3 days left for the polls. Don't forget to vote!

It did take me about a week to get used to the Mac, including a few things (like right clicking) you do all the time in Windows. Another thing is that if someone needs PC or Mac help, most people probably know a lot more PC-literate friends unless they're in an unusual crowd.

PCs are probably in part easy because a lot of common PC actions are a part of common speech these days. Terms and concepts being familiar is a big help in learning something new, such as when my mom undertook to learn using PCs a few years ago.

They do seem to parallel each other these days!

Word (from beta testers, etc.) is that Windows 7 is pretty good and will address many Vista issues. Makes sense in that it seems MS gets every other O/S more or less right. Win 3.1/3.11 pretty good (for the era), Win 95 had many problems; Win 98 good, Win ME/2000 lots of problems, XP well thought out, Vista - problems; Win 7 ...

... if they follow the pattern should be good.

Ha! So I'm not the only one that's noticed that pattern. What's with that - like they say to each other at the management meeting; "well, our last OS works great. Time to build a stinker...!"

Anyhow. Mac vs PC? As we know on this Forum: it's all in the fingers!

 - C
