70's without a doubt. Big hair metal wasn't my thing at all. I allergic to spandex and big hair.

I also say the '70s... Hard rock from this era is still VERY listenable (UFO, Foghat, Pat Travers, Trower, Deep Purple, Zeppelin ... even Kiss, Nugent, and Alice Cooper). By contrast, most of the 80s hair metal you can not tolerate listening to a whole album of today (Ratt, Dokken, etc.). GnR and Van Halen clearly dominate the the best from the '80s with some other lesser nice contributors like Badlands that still sound good (and not cheesy) today.

Further, I think '70s Judas Priest, AC/DC, and Scorpions was FAR better than their '80s material.

I have to agree with Van Halen and Guns 'n' Roses being the best hard rock bands of the 80s (though even VH first got big in the 70s!).

The 70s, by contrast, had Zeppelin, Queen, classic Aerosmith, Pink Floyd, AC/DC, the Stones, the Who...there's just no comparison. 70s hands down!

Ok then, how about:

Judas Priest
Van Halen
Whitesnake
Scorpions
Rush
Def Leppard
Ted Nugent
Heart
Lita Ford

To name a few.

Some of the hair bands of the 80's had guitarist that had wonderous chops. I always thought it was wasted on some very low-art, lame musical product, though.

I also thought we owed Nirvana and the rest of the grundge scene a huge dept of gratitude for saving us from that trash.

No brainer. The 70's were a magical time for rock. Concert tickets were 7 or 8 bucks. Saw the likes of Hendrix(June 70) Deep Purple, Humble Pie, Kansas, Emerson lLake and Palmer,Rolling Stones, Led Zepplin, Grateful Dead, Jethro Tull, Grand Funk Railroad, Johnny Winter, Janis Joplin (69),Fleetwood Mac, Mike Bloomfield (Feb 70), Mad Dogs and Englishmen Tour, and a lot I'll never remember. 8) Mike

If it weren't for the ground work and foundation laid down in the 70s, much of the stuff from the 80s would probably not exist in the forms we are familiar with today...

You could say the same with the 60's to 70's... 50's to 60's etc.

My teenage years were in the 80's. With that being said, I like the 80's bands...not too hot on the "pop" bands though, but bands like Iron Maiden and Metallica, and Megadeth. These were bands they would not play on my local radio station. If they played it, it was crap.

I also like the 60's rock bands like Rolling Stones, Jimmy Hendrix, and The Beatles.

70's bands like Black Sabbath, Blue Oyster Cult, and Led Zepplin were also good.

I also like bands that spanned decades like Rush, Pink Floyd, Ted Nuggent, and Van Halen. I guess that I like a wide variety of music.

Which is better 70's or 80's music...just a matter of opinion, and I cannot decide.

Yeah, I'm sort of saying you can't really pick just one era as "the best" as everything builds off of everything else...
