I was thinking a few minutes ago, about when I see things priced at one cent lower (or approximate amount), in order to distract you from the rounded value that you are paying.

Example: $499.99 for a Standard strat.

I may be wrong, but I don't think it works. People will still say, "that guitar costs 500 bucks." So let's say, theoretically, this guitar was shown at $500. To the consumer, one cent wouldn't make a squat of difference, but if a million people purchased this product, that's ten thousand dollars extra, right there.

I'm waiting for SlapChop and BigJay to comment on this.

But guys, be civil PLEASE. I'm not looking for a heated political debate. Just opinions, and I'd be happily proven wrong.

Been doing that with Gas for like ever!!!! I even find myself saying prices in terms of 499.00 when it is 499.99. It does work or the practice would have been dropped long ago. It also allows placement in the under 500.00 dollar range. not the 500 and under. The latter wording makes things sound expensive where as saying under 500 gives the impression of low cost. All a play on words to create a different thought.

I used to sell used cars, and we priced all our cars that way. For example, a car would cost $13,998 instead of $14,000. And we were told to say the price as "THIRTEEN nineninetyeight." By emphasizing just the first number and treating the rest as "and change," we got the customer to follow suit. Underhanded? Maybe, but it works!

Better yet, why is gas $2.599 ? They just use the tenth of a cent to play with people.
