I know this is a silly question, but do the bobbins in pickups in any way affect tone?

Because I've read that the gray bottom in the late '60s pickups gave the sound a 'thumping low end' and I'm not too sure it affects tone. Is it just for cosmetics, because that's what I am now thinking. And really, who needs cosmetics? You don't actually see the bobbin until you take apart the guitar!
