Hey Im just heading off to college and where I am going they give you a laptop, so I am stuck with an HP instead of a mac. I was just wondering if anybody knew of good recording software for my HP. Thanks for your help.

With one word 'Reaper' ($60) http://www.reaper.fm/, you'll need a audio interface.

I started out on Sony's ACID Music Studio ($69) before I traded up to ACID Pro. Sony is offering a rebate -- $20 - $25 -- until the end of the month. You'll need an interface for this software and most any other you choose.

You may get stuck with the Vista OS on your laptop. Make sure the software is compatible and your interface has the proper drivers. Some hardware being sold today doesn't have drivers for Vista.

I've used a lot over the years from Audacity to Pro Tools. One that I've used that I like a lot, and I might actually get is Adobe Audition. That was pretty much everything I wanted in recording software, set up very nice, super easy to work with and looked great. I need to look into that more...

Ableton Live is great if you want to add midi instruments to your "live" tracks or vica versa...

Audacity is very user friendly. Any sound that comes out of your computer
can be recorded direct with audacity. Just set the input to "wav out" mix and you can watch a YouTube clip while recording the audio to audacity.

Cubase, Sonar, all good, I'd check them all out, but audacity is FREE. 8)
