I graduated from Vanderbilt in 1997, and unless they changed something in the Music program, at the time I was there, Music Production, was not available...it was more the theory type stuff for various instruments. The schools to go to when I was living there for music production (though, this may have changed since being there) were Belmont University and MTSU. If Vandy now has music production, thats cool...maybe I have to go back, if not, look into either Belmont, which is in Nashville just like Vandy, or MTSU in Murfeesboro, which is close enough to Nashville to say you're from Nashville...

In fact, I don't think Vandy has a music production program:

performance, composition/theory, musical arts, and the musical

okay cool thanks alot i thought music production was available at vandy oh well though MTSU would still be cool, but would getting a job in the music industry be tough with a good degree right out of college?

Things might have changed. They offer some Music Production classes at my local Jr College. They should have an online catalog of classes available.

Any job in the music industry can, and most likely at times will, be tough to get, even with a degree. I have found it is oftentimes not what you know, but who you know...I mean I graduated from Vandy in '97, but got my first job as a DJ at WKDF from who I knew (one of the Djs) and not from what I knew, even though I majored in British/American Lit and minored in communcation studies, but its not just in the music industry, pretty much life is like that...

The link I included was to their current online catalog...no music production program at Vanderbilt, the music school at Vandebilt is known as the Blair School of Music. Maybe by the time he gets to college they might, but currently, not part of the curriculum offered at Vanderbilt.

It's great to be young and have dreams!

set two goals in life, one short term (next 5 years) and another long term goal...and follow your dreams.

Irishmike203,

Good for you, most kids do not know what they want to be when they grow up. Start tailoring your high school classes to help you along, just remember that your state still has requirements that they have to teach you, so try to do well in those classes too. A higher GPA will open more doors for you when the time comes for college. Remember to still have fun while you are young too.

The economy in general isn't the greatest right now, and the music industry has never really been the biggest field with tons of open jobs like that. Finding a good job that you want in this field will always be hard, with or without a degree. Having a music degree certainly won't guarantee you any job, or even that you'll "beat out" someone with no degree at all, but a lot of experience on paper that you don't have.

Go because you want to, because you want the knowledge, and because it's something you've always wanted to do. Don't go thinking it will be your ticket to your dream music job, because there's a very slim chance of that degree alone doing that.

As the youthful, colourfully-garbed, impossibly hip denizens of the great city of Chicago exclaim, their substantial enthusiasm accompanied by flourishing gestures and elaborate hand choreography, "You go, Dude!"
