i think you have to name it after something that has a meaning in your life. i have a black strat that i named after my black dog, Daisy. I dont try to put names to them unless they fit.

I've named the electrics, but not the acoustics.

As far as them "already having names," while true enough that can get inefficient when you have more than one guitar of the same general type. For example, I have 3 Telecasters. I could call one of them by it's "given" name, but "Tex-Mex Telecaster Special" doesn't exactly roll trippingly off the tongue now, does it? "Brownie" is a lot better, from my vantage.

Anyhow, here are the guitars and basses and their names:

Sonia '60 Duo-Sonic
Brownie Tex-Mex Tele Special
Blondie '52 RI Telecaster
Seven Squier MIJ P-Bass
Ruby DeArmond Jet Star
Blue Ovation Breadwinner
Chrissie Hamer USA Special
Cherie Les Paul Studio DC
Nell Fender Standard Jazz Bass
Joan Gretsch Electromatic Special Jet
Violet “parts” Telecaster w/Seymour Duncan mini-hum in neck
Raquel Fernandes Ravelle
Valerie Agile P-90 Valkyrie II
Theresa 1980 Peavey T-60
Cassie Les Paul Classic
Rickie Rickenbacker 620
Candy Peavey USA Predator Strat
Stormy Schecter Tempest Special
Corrine Brownsville Choirboy
Rose Daisy Rock Retro-H

The names are all linked to the guitar's appearance or model name in some way. My kids have a lot of fun with the guitars having names, as do I.

I name my guitars with Japanese names. I've also named my Miata this way.

Taka (Hawk) - a 2005 Squier '51
Yume (Dream) - a 2006 Squier Cherryburst Strat

I don't name cars or guitars until I know their personality - then I pick an appropriate name. My car is named Washu - after a curious scientific reseacher in a Japanese anime.
