Seriously, I ran into a guy today who was like dissing Fender Stratocasters, said he "learned" on one but now he plays a Vai from Ibanez. Says it's got a wide fret board, a thin neck, a lot of space between strings yada yada yada.

Well, I'm diehard Fender with a Squier Strat and a Highway One Strat. Imho, if you can't sound like magic on a Highway One for $500 plus tax, give it up because you ain't never gonna be no good. I should know because I've been playing guitar for 24 year off and on and play all the time every day and I still suck but I sound like freakin' magic on my Highway One Strat and Blues Junior amp. Fender is the best giving consumers this kind of incredible equipment at affordable prices designed and engineered and marketed and often built in whole or part right here in Norte America.

I tell you with all respect to Steve VAi that it kills me Fender gets dissed all the time by people who are so snooty they want to pay two grand and have a freakin' hole in their guitar and an extra string. So, let your voice be heard:

The original and still the best Fender,
or those cheap knock offs from Ibanez?

I think you're being snooty too, but I agree with you to an extent.

I've never been an Ibanez fan, nothing to do with heritage or anything like that, it's just I dislike their guitars. I don't like the looks of any I've laid eyes upon...I've played a few and they're alright but I've never really played one and thought 'I want this' which has happened with many a fender (and indeed Rickenbacker, Musicman, Gibson - yikes) I've tried.

Horses for courses though, everyone has their own preference it'd be boring if everyone played just fenders!

You said it,my friend!
Sure you can keep the es 335,but if you want to be very "pure" there's always the Starfire from Guild and DeArmond or how about a Fender Coronado or Starcaster?

I'm no expert or anything, but in my experience with ibanez, they sound kinda cool with a load of distortion and crap. But it's terrible when played clean.

I love both ibanez and fender. But I do agree, you are being slightly snooty as well. And don't be dissing 7 string guitars.

But on the topic, of paying a few grand for a signature Vai model, its the same as spending to grand on a John Mayer model. (and in all honesty, I like the vai better than the mayer)

And furthermore, In general, Ibanez's are not very expensive compared to brands like fender and gibson, but still deliver quality.

Just a note, I am not saying anything against fender here, just trying to defend ibanez. I am going to refrain from voting aswell.

Just my $0.02

I think it has more to do with "style", than anything else.

I have nothing against Ibanez, they make some pretty cool stuff, not to mention the tubescreamer thats become somewhat of a legend. Their hollowbodies are not bad either. But the strat style guitars they have (yeah, I'll call them strat style, looks like they copied off of somebody) with the evil looks and everything, just appeals to the metal heads I guess.

I'm just glad Fender didn't give into that crap. They stayed true to what they did back in the old days and didn't totally venture off into some other direction.

It's like they said: "Why should we change anything, we're perfect".

Next time you see this guy, ask him: "If Ibanez is better, then why do they look like Fenders so much"? hehe, he'll think about that one for a minute.

I'm not gonna vote because it's another of those "apples and oranges" choices.

The Ibanez is designed for metal, gain and speed. It's pretty much a one trick pony. You really won't see anyone playing jazz or clean stuff.

Our beloved Stratocaster was designed to be versitile and be at home in almost any genre.

I can't really compare the two.

It's fair to say that you cannot compare an Ibanez Vai to a Fender Stratocaster from an artistic point of view. But that comparison is made every day in the marketplace. The Vai doesn't compete with my Highway One, but it does go head-to-head with Custom Pros, Johnson's, Claptons, Becks, etc. Ibanez is a Japanese competitor to Fender, and that's real. This guy who I won't identify who is a good guy and is very modest about his playing and probably is a lot better than me although that's not saying too much - he is very clearly making the comparison. His point of view that he communicated very clearly is that a Fender Stratocaster - and he's got one that he "never plays" implying that its just too much to ask to play one - is not in the same league as his Ibanez Vai Stratocaster "improvement" that I would call a clone. The marketplace is full of competing products and the competition is real.

The winners are us, not Ibanez and not even Fender. We get choice, and we don't have to buy vintage pre-CBS to get a good guitar, because Fender got it together again.

Personally, I don't want a 7- string guitar or a 12-string guitar, because 6 strings give me all that I can handle, I don't mind that there is one for the people who want it. However, I do think that when a choice is made by a musician to play a Vai, he should refrain from knocking or putting down Stratocasters as okay to own, but not to play, except to "learn on." The comparison was not made by me, but by a decent guy and a better musician who is sold on his Vai to the point that he can't see playing a Stratocaster as a valid choice.

IMO there is a very good reason for a 12 string guitar - less so for a 7 stringed.
