Lately, I been listening to a lot of soul music from the early 70's. Tower of Power,AWB, and Seawind, which i really like, because of their message content. I truly believe, that those crossover bands really had a lot more going on. I can't really call them "crossover", because of the environment these groups came from. Just like, another group, Hiroshama which came from LA, not Japan. I just love that harp-like instrument they have in their band, which is still together, since the 80's. Tower of Power, which came from Oakland, Calif, has a very unique "sound" from the East Bay Area. AWB, which came from Scotland, "of all places", came playing the real funk. I remember, back in the day, that the "brothers", accused AWB of stealing the funk, from the" brother, but, when Steve Ferrone replaced the late Robbie Mcintosh, some brothers still didn't get it, that Steve is from England, and He's English, not American. It seems to me, when bands comes from Ghettoes, either here in the Us, or from around the world, there is something about being raised in the "Hood". We hear all types of music, and being, I'm from the "Hood" myself, we then, mix those styles together. Being, I'm a Fender Bassist, the bass of choice to play soul music, is the Fender P-bass. It gets right to the bottom. A Jazz bass is cool too, but it doesn't give you that floor moving punch, the P-bass gives you!. The Jazz, gives you, that pop and snap, that larry Graham made famous! In closing, Francis "Rocco" Pretia, gives Tower of Power that "bottom" that makes them so funky. Alan Gorrie and Hamish Stuart, gives AWB that soul funk bottom, and when they were together , they would switch, and Hamish is one funky bass player!. Seawind's bassist, Ken Wild,is like a cross between, Rocco, and Alan and Hamish. He plays so loose and cool. I just wanted to add my two cent, because these guys changed the way I play Fender Bass.
