About 8 hours of vinyl.

I have two used like new Candy-O (The Cars) albums. Almost identical in appearance. Subtle difference in the basically white cover, perhaps aging and/or storage created or maybe not. Was one produced in a different location or under different conditions? Is one fake?

A look at the vinyl and label wasn’t much immediate help except that one version had embossed vinyl info as opposed to the other with engraved hand written details like the catalogue and matrix number with code, initials of the master or pressing engineer, and A1 and B1 (briefly, other combos with 1 and 2 also can apply) written on the dead wax (sides 1 and / 2 respectively).

Eureka! Not certain, but generally speaking, the subtly brighter and slightly more saturated cover is very likely holding a first pressing. :D
A concentrated listen, although close with the embossed version, seems to verify that. If anything, they are both authentic or both fake which is doubtful. It should be noted that some coding on a records’s inner grooves might tell more about the studio and even the tape deck used for example.

I’m not rushing to check all my records for this (it’s not vintage wine or a rarity); but, it helps to choose which of the two LPs to keep. :P

That's interesting, FSB. I don't have the album so I'm no help there.

This morning listening to Linda Ronstadt's "Heart Like A Wheel".

One can never go wrong listening to Linda Ronstadt, Mike. :D
Just by default I did some research and luckily found more than I knew before about those and similar discs. I have several reference books on the art of records with things such as photos on the progression of and rare labels on 78’s, 45’s, and LPs. Collecting labels is a huge hobby. Some labels are mounted above and partly below the vinyl pressing . Other than with research and some picked out special records, I don’t indulge because I have too many hobbies and not enough time.

One article went on to make a comparison of digital versus vinyl. It pointed out that digital recordings for public consumption may, more often than not, give us non original selections for a number of reasons. No surprise here. That will likely continue with change over time. It’s hard to tell what is original these days unless you have something authentic to compare with from the era. Also, it went on to say that downloading digital has the opportunity to add all sorts of ugly things from viruses, to malware, and more. It goes on, but that’s the gist.

Don’t get me wrong, I use digital for benefits too, and what a great bunch of tools available without breaking the bank. The problem I have is with many digital amps not being serviceable or software failures or OSs not playing nice or formats going obsolete or a kazillion interface issues and cords that no longer or never did work with this or that. In fact, I’m not sure whether to first troubleshoot the Midi connectivity or the Ableton that no longer opens with a new free plugin from the interface company. A reinstall for Ableton is likely, as usual for a last kick at the can, probably losing something in the works, and don’t ya love all the security and privacy hurdles attached to those installs?
The record will always be a mature format able to be played as intended over time, Scratches can usually be addressed or not. I find minor scratches less irritating than pickup hum. YMMV. Obviously others do as well. Digital will add that record characteristic for your Wave or MP3 or any other non standard format. CDs appear to be nearing obsolescence right next to that MD; but, there in the drawer sits my voice etched into a 70 year old record and, as bad as it is, no problem finding a player new or old.
Yep. Digital is cool when it works. Otherwise, there might be nuttin’ to listen to.

Thankfully, we have lots to choose from and, so that we can spend more time producing and or listening, we can trust that the techie gurus callin’ the shots will eventually work things out in the direction of simplicity. Right? Hello! Techie Gurus? Anybody? Oh. This old thing? It’s called a turntable and the plug in? Over there. One plug in for all. Why? Plug and play simplicity dude.
