Factoid: Apparently, Cash wanted to do the Folsom Prison recording earlier, but it wasn’t until there were personnel changes at CBS that Johnny’s album came about. (It may be that ABC/MCA saw an opportunity with B.B. to cash in at Cook after Cash’s related success at CBS).

Folsom certainly wasn’t the first prison recording, John and Alan Lomax ethnomusicologist made many prison recordings in the early 30s/40s (primarily from Mississippi) including Lead Belly (Louisiana’s State prison - Angola), and I believe other songs came from the 20s, but prisons were different then, and chain gang recordings took place with rarity also having difficulty with mobility of equipment of the era. Regardless, this B.B. King album pushed him further into the public’s eyes and ears.

Interesting. I know that the Mississippi State Penitentiary had some older ones.
