I’m going out on a limb here. Please, don’t slash me on this as I sit on both camps pro and con, and this is no way a critique or disdain of choices made with this topic. I bruise easily.
Most of us have experienced a variety of pickups announcing that they are the answer to replicating vintage sounds. I have spent the last week or so entertaining myself with a plethora of different designed and similarly directed pups from competing manufacturers all proclaiming more or less to replicate that original old time sound.

Eureka! This reminds me of the tonewood argument. Not going there. Nope, nope, nope.

This sounds or doesn’t sound like the original. Hmm? Really? Close I get it? Is that exact really possible? It’s not as if the oldies but goodies were a standard build. Windings, magnets, wiring, pots, etc. varied as did amps and speakers. That certainly is even more evident when comparing to today’s materials and so on (although, sometimes we are lucky to have the same or similar materials available for a repro). Now if an all original amp and cab is used that certainly brings it closer to the holy grail reached for.

At the best, as is often done, we can pick one vintage axe at a time for a stab at recreating a sound. That’s pretty good in my books; but, to think that’s a norm . . . well, I’ll let you decide.

To be brief I think bad, good. better, best applies here. But even then, what are we using for reference? An early axe that has a sweet spot of it’s own? Hmm? Maybe, the clone with similar characteristics sounds a tad (or a lot) better than the replicated or perceived original.

Sampling certainly may have a niche here. But, unlike today’s builds, I think it’s safe to say that, seldom if ever, there’s no assurance that an original ‘54, ‘57, ‘60, ‘65, ‘69, and so on will sound like another all things being equal. There’s some beauty to that IMHO. (Another well known guitar manufacturer promotes that each guitar has a sound of their own. Is that intended or is it because they have difficulty matching the sound?)

Are we speaking of Tom, Dick, Harry’s, or our favourite Abigail’s contribution to tone?

I dunno for sure, but if that exactness ever happens, those originals could become a nice collection of wood. Still I’ll bite.
FSB

Meanwhile, advancements in pickups and their associated electronics are sharing in the history. Whatever you have enjoy the mojo and rawk on. :D
