Okay, so i'm thinking about buying a new guitar as soon as i get the funds. (to replace my squier) anyway, i played a highway one strat at guitar center, and liked it. however, now i'm thinking that i really don't like the glassy tone. i'm wondering if i can buy the highway one and replace the pickups. would that get rid of the glassy tone?

also, would buying a highway one and replacing the pickups (good ones) be cheaper than buying an american standard?

one more question: what would be good pickups for playing hard rock (ac/dc style), punk rock, and blues?

thanks for the help.

hmmm... i'd re-think the highway 1. if you don't like how a guitar sounds... why buy it in the first place? there's a reason there are so many manufacturers making so many different models. play 'em all. i'll bet you'll find something that'll blow you away.
when you find it, buy it.

well, basically because it's about 400 bucks cheaper. but yeah when i get to the point where i can actually afford a guitar, i'll spend about 3 hours in guitar center tryin' some out. if what i want is too expensive then i'll just have to save up for it.

I'm not a big fan of how the Highway One sounds either. They feel great, and they're very affordable, but my Affinity Squier with Texas Specials blew it away in a side by side comparison. I played both through the same amp and my Squier sounded way better. I bet that you could buy replacement pickups for a Highway One and make it sound like you want it to while still paying less than you would for an American Standard. If the Highway One is $400 cheaper, and you spend about $200 on pickups you'll have a great sounding, custom guitar and you'd still have saved $200. Just something to think about...

For the music you want try Dimarzio fast track 1 in the neck and middle and a fast track2 in the bridge.

You can get a replacement set for $180 - $240 (depending on model, etc., etc.). Here's one place that compares Fender and Fralin:

http://www.acmeguitarworks.com/Strat_Pi ... ips_W1.cfm

... and you can probably find other sites too. In the above, the Fralin replacements run about $220 and you have quite a few options. The Fenders have quite a few too and run around 180.

Next question is: can you install them yourself? If not, then between sales tax, shipping and having someone do the install, you're getting pretty close to the $400 difference.

If I bought Fenders (@ 180) plus CA sales tax and say $20 shipping, I'm looking at $220. The guy I take all my guitars to charges $58 to wire and install pups, so call it $60 with tax ... now I have $280. With the more expensive Fralins, I'd be looking at $320 total in round figures (if I needed installation).

Hi j_rockr91: well, speaking as someone who walked into a guitar store with the intention of trying and buying a Highway One guitar... and walked out with a nice US Standard in Sienna Sunburst instead - I can honestly say that's the way I'd go!

Assuming you do like the feel and sound of the American Standard, that is...

Cheers - C

I would look at remoding the squire to get the sound you want or look at other brands with no dis respect to Fender. The Gibson SG is the guitar you might want to check out for what you want.
