Anyone know of a good distortion device to get the band "Boston" sound.
The original rockman distortion generator that they used has not been produced since the 1980's. Any idea of what can be used in todays distorters to get that
"Boston" Sound ?

Sometimes they have them on ebay keep an eye out. Tom Sholtz was such a wizard in the studio I dont know if you can really ever duplicate a lot of them songs especially live. There a ton of overdubbing and like 20 guitars on a track.lol

I saw Boston live back in the late '70s, and Tom Scholz was able to to get that tone live. I talked to him a few times as well.

Over on the BOSS site, there is a web feature Pedals That Make The Tone http://www.bossus.com/go/tone/2007-11.html created by my friend Paul Hanson.

There is an example for Boston's Foreplay/Longtime at the bottom of the page.

When I talked to Scholz in late '79 he told that he was working on a commercial 'home' design of his effects, one turned out to the Rockman. I brought mine direct from Scholz, it was #3

I got a Rockman back in the day and always used it for live sound. If I ever used it as a headphone amp, I have forgotten about it. :)

When I first started using it I took it to a gig and just plugged it in setting on top of my 1966 Deluxe Reverb (K120JBL). The tone the thing got with a Pre-C Jazzmaster got people to stop talking and turn around in there seats. (This happen from the first note because of the tone and not my lead guitar abilities). The Rockman produces a big "studio" type sound.

I still use the same unit until this day. Now I have it in a a Rockmount. The footswitch wore out and I always have it on. Edge setting with no chorus. it adds a little color for ryhtum and more grit when I turn up for a lead.

At one point I bought the two rack mount rock modules made by Tom, but I never got any great tone out of it and went back to the Rockman.

If I remember correctly, it is the same set up (Rockman/Rockmount) that Bruce Springsteen uses currently. I saw an article where he apologized for the simplicity of his set up. :D

I only used my a couple of times at a gig. I always carried it in my gig bag, and there was a couple times when my didn't work (once was a busted tube) and I plugged my Rockman into the PA. I remember it sounded pretty good.

But mainly I used it as a headphone amp. I was a single parent with two young kids, used it to practice and learn songs at night. I had a long headphone cable that went from my stereo receiver to the Rockman, than I could play a record, and play along with the main speakers muted.

I spent many hours using my Rockman to learn songs.

tpp23 go on ebay they have a few selections. I remember when they came out but never owned one. Thouston could probably point you in the right direction if you ask Tony about the items that are up.
