My God how great is he. I can never get enough of Gary. That vibrato is killer and nobody except Django who I have only seen lil clips of can play those lightning runs using just there first and second finger. He is truly one guy I learned a lot of from watching him play live on dvds. Using the 1-2 finger runs more working my vibrato and throwing in harmonic minor scale licks in blues. I mean for all you cats that dont know much about Gary go get some cds he is one of the best and a guitarist guitarist. Even Yngwie who is one of the best guys to read in an interview because he is so full of himself (though he can back it up I hate to admit) but he is never afraid to slam another player and I have read him bash Beck to Vai which shows he is not all there lol said Gary Moore now that guy can play.

I own several of his CD's and have tried to cultivate a taste for his 'feel' but I find it a bit over the top for blues. Mind you, I take nothing away from him and his virtuosity, its just that, when I listen to him I feel I'm being hammered. Different strokes, I suppose.

Doc

Thanks!

Another great guitarist who I don't see getting his due with the general listening public.

As for blues, Doc makes a good point -- I've always thought of him as more blues-rock than traditional blues. Be that as it may, the guy is still great.

It's my understanding that he made his bones in 'metal' and then turned back to blues. Seems that once fomerly immersed the transition is never complete. I sensed this in the player whose band I reviewed in my post this weekend.

Doc.

He played with Thin Lizzy and Skid Row, but was influenced by Peter Green so much that recorded an album called "Blues For Greeny" of all Peter Green compositions.

according to Wikipedia :

"On the album Moore played Peter Green's celebrated 1959 Les Paul standard guitar which Green had loaned to Moore after leaving Fleetwood Mac. Moore ultimately purchased the guitar, at Green's request, so that "it would have a good home"."

The story of the guitar is legend but comparing the styles of the two owners : Moore vs Green (from my own Fleetwood Mac collection)...the feel on his CD's is definitely not 'bluesy'. He tends to 'runaway' in his solos if you get my drift.

Hi Doc, I haven't picked up Moore's newest Blues CD yet, but the review I read said he was playing Blues with more restraint these days. I agree at times he can go overboard a bit with some of his solos. Still he's on my Top 5 list of favorite players.

Never heard him play Jazz before!

wtcumm00 thanks for the heads up!
