I heard lately about Tommy Emmanuel coming to my town, so this morning I just bought two tickets for the show in three weeks. :D Now I can hardly wait.

Hi Claude: I expect you'll have seen the clips of Tommy Emmanuel that Miami Mike posted on pages 1 and 6 of his YouTube thread.

I think you are in for a real treat! Please let us know how it goes...

Cheers - C

I've now seen Tommy twice, and man, there's nobody else like him. Tommy is truly the type of artist that you MUST see live, because recorded performances don't do him justice.

Have a great time!

Pat

Yep you'll be in for a good show. I saw him about 15 years ago for the first time and was surprised at how interactive he is with the audience. Personally I find him a bit tedious to listen to (on a CD) but live its a completely different story. He just blows you away.

Cheers.

Yeah, CD is not the way to go with Tommy... I've never quite been able to put my finger on the reason why. I saw him play a few weeks ago and felt the usual combination of incredulity and self-loathing -- his prowess is such that I found myself wondering whether any human being in any field has ever been better at what they do than he is. As he said at the time, though, he has been practicing for close to fifty years now, and doing it diligently enough that many other aspects of his life have fallen by the wayside. He's as relentless as ever, but he now conducts his meet-'n'-greets before the show instead of afterward as he finds he's a bit more tired after the show these days. It must take a lot of stamina.

I've seen him play three times over the last 20-odd years... the first was at a pub just down the road from my home (at the time) in the Blue Mountains, when I'd been playing for a couple of years and thought that a steel-string guitarist could hold little interest for me. Needless to say, I felt like I'd stepped into a wind tunnel and came home to hammer my acoustic guitar for the next ten years.

The second time was not that long afterward, and I was going with some school friends to see Eric Clapton down in Sydney. We were imbibing a few before the show, and when I expressed concern that we might be running late I was assured that we'd "only be missing out on the support act, anyway"

"You wouldn't know who's supporting him, would you?"

"Some guy... Tommy... Tommy something..."

So I hustled everyone out of the pub immediately and we watched Mr Emmanuel make Clapton's life hell for the evening... don't get me wrong, E.C. put in a great performance, but... nobody would want to follow Tommy Emmanuel onstage. His performance seems to expand to fill the available space, which was arena-sized in this instance.

Anyway... anybody who has a chance to see him should do so; it's always worth experiencing someone who is exceptionally good at what they do!

I'm sure that you'll be amazed. Looking forward to hearing your review on the show.

Is he doing it solo or with others?

Well it is not specified wether he'll be alone or with other musicians, but I think he'll be solo.

Oh oh, it seems that the link doesn't show the page directly, just click on "Programmation" and you'll see the upcoming shows and the add for Tommy Emmanuel.

Anyway, I'll keep you posted on anything interesting. :D

Cool...I looked too and it appears to be a solo show...which is just as great. Found this info about his tunings and strings :

TE uses .012 - .054 gauge strings on the EBG808TE and the Custom Jumbo Matons, and the TE1 has .013 - .056 gauge strings. He varies the brands but mainly uses Martin, Everly or Dean Markley.

EBG808TE - E-A-D-G-B-E @ 444hz
Custom Jumbo - D-G-D-G-B-E @ 444hz
TE1 - C#-F#-B-E-G#-C# @ 444hz

*These are TE's usual tunings and string gauges *

Recycling an old thread. Yesterday night was the Tommy Emmanuel show in Quebec city and I was there. Two hours and a half of pure bliss. If you never saw him live and get the chance to someday, do it you won't regret it. He's charming, joking, telling stories, even sang a song a capella. He dedicated "Somewhere over the rainbow" to Les Paul, it was so emotional I saw a few people wipe a tear after the song. He talked about his daughters, his friends, his guitars, his equipment and the tunes kept coming one after the other all night long. It was his first time here and he seemed so relaxed and happy to play it was unforgettable. He played a few covers, his Beatles meddley, hey, Amazing Grace was really something. I guess he played some new stuff, but everything I heard yesterday was new to me. A night to remember and cherish until next time, he said he'd be back yeah. :D It is impossible to record a show like this and have the feeling of a live show on a cd. You have to be there. A great show. Do yourself a favor, go see him.
