I once played an Ibanez Les Paul copy, (built in the early 80's), for an extended period over some 7 hours. Afterward, my shoulder was absolutely killing me. This was a heavy guitar. I did this kind of thing on my, much lighter, 75' Strat and never had this problem.

As for sustain, Warmoth produced guitar bodies that are chamber hollowed. These bodies are supposed to produce better sustain along with being a lot lighter.

Do me a favor and don't say that in an acoustic guitar forum if I'm around. I don't wanna see the carnage.

Sixth paragraph from the end. This from a luthier that builds custom acustics.

I thought we were talking about sustain, not how wood effects tone. Much different than sustain. A heavy guitar will not sustain any more than a lighter guitar. Vinny was talking weight, not mass or density.

Tell them at Martin Guitar wood choice isn't important for their acoustics.

In particular, mass is commonly identified with weight. But according to our modern scientific understanding, the weight of an object results from the interaction of its mass with a gravitational field, so while mass is part of the explanation of weight, it is not the complete explanation.

Hey there are good guitars and bad ones. I love the sound of a Les Paul but the bottom line is it has Humbuckers in it and that more than the extra weight will give it a bit more sustain . I have lighter strats that sustain a bit better than some heavier ones I have. I think people get to hung up on strings, nuts, picks and the rest which all play a microscopic differance in tone and sustain but not as big as some make it out to be. Slapchop made some good points and the best one being you play good with your setup then it is good.

I don't agree with that old myth. But feel free to play whatever you like.

The heaviest (single neck) Strat I have is my 1975, which weighs in at 9.05 lbs (that's about 9 lbs 1 oz). (My doubleneck weighs 12.5 lbs.)

I bet any lack of sustain one might find on any guitar is due to old worn out strings or improperly set pickup heights!

I like the heft of my Les Paul--I find it comfortable and in a sense--reassuring--it's not going anywhere on me, but then I also enjoy the almost weightless feel of my Mustang.

I can appreciate both.

What I'd probably do if I were in a gigging band would be to start with the heavier guitars and end up with a lighter one by the end of the night-probably the Mustang or Ibanez Artcore.

Every one that performs does not always stand up, if that is the only issue your worried about it is a non arguement as I dont gig at this stage and only record and for me to sit down is fine no matter how heavy the guitar is as long as I get a great natural sound and you know how I know I am right about a heavier guitar giving a superior sound and it involves no pic ups at all. Grab a couple of guitars different weights as long as they are quality guitars and strum them unplugged and listen to each one, which has the richer cleaner more sustaining sound, please keep acoustic guitars out of this I am only talking about electric solid body guitars not even hollow body electrics. I strummed a light weight strat unplugged and then a heavy strat and the heavy strat won hands down and when plugged in it also won hands down for sound quality. Thats how you test the solid body electrics. I have commenced building guitars and I know for a fact its 75% weight and 25% pic ups which create superior sound. Fender only uses light weight bodies because they are CHEAP WOOD sorry to say that.

I have seen and heard Page and Vai play double and triple neck guitars live and on disc. Now that is a lot of wood but neither guitar had better sustain than say Gary Moore playing a Les Paul or Hendrix playing Red House.

Ah now guys let me stick up for my mate.
He may not know how to articulate guitar building knowledge. He may subscribe to a whole notion that someone who's views (slapchop) are dead
set against. And give them more creedance than they are worth.

BUT

The simple fact remains that we as players note and mark our rituals. We believe things that we arent too keen to share, why?

Not all is science, if it was we'd all be robots. Theres a ethereal/tactile nature to human existance that doesnt happen with our animal friends.

Thats all i'm saying on it.
