I use Sonar Pro version 6. I play Drums keyboards woodwinds and of course, guitars. I lay down all the tracks separately (obviously) with rhyme or reason as to which track is first.

Can the BR-600 be connected to an amp rather than using the headphones?

Go buy a set of powered monitors and 1 1/4 inch stereo to 2 channel "Y". Plug into the monitors and you've got no headphone sounds.

I use a Fostex VF-160EX, a couple of mikes (AT4040s and SM58s mostly), for my home set up.

Bumping This thread 'cause it's very helpful for those of us who are still struggling with the intricacies of Home Recording.

I started on a Tascam Porta07 when I was in high school. In '05 or so I got the Tascam DP01FX/CD. Upgraded to the Tascam 2488 about a year later.

The 2488 is pretty mighty in a "I'm digital but I feel like I'm analog" sort of way. It's got a lot of decent features, but the manual is crappy. Spending time on the Tascam user forums really helped me get the most out of it.

Sometime in the next couple of weeks I'm going to do a live Vocal/Acoustic EP on it. I've got that sort thing down really well on the 2488. After that I'm going to re-start working on a full band LP. I've done a lot of demo rough drafts, and think I'm ready for the big show on it finally.

Typically, I use the 2488 for premastering. I do all the mastering in Audacity, though I might upgrade to SoundWaves soon. I also bought Cakewalk the other day so that I could arrange drum samples better (don't have a live drummer at this point).

I like to go direct with SansAmp pedals. And having condensor mic's are a must for any decent recording.

That said, I let my brother have the DP01 and let him borrow a couple of Sure 58's and 57's... he's been having a lot of fun experimenting with non-traditional and low-budget stuff.

Well, I'm a re-beginner at guitar - but I've made myself well prepared for practicing and recording.

Image

In the photo you can see (left to right, top to bottom):

Fender Neon Light (really important)
M-Audio Studiophile DX4 Powered Monitors
Sennheiser HD280 Headphones on a Dell Monitor,
M-Audio Trigger Finger on top of a Sony PS-2,
Line6 Toneport KB37 - a 37-key MIDI keyboard + audio interface,
Apple PowerMac G4 computer + 17" Apple Display,
Various external Firewire hard drives,
Various Guitar Instruction DVDs + Apple Firewire iSight Camera,
On-Stage MS7520 Mic Package at the right.

I also use my Apple MacBook Pro as an audio computer (not pictured).

I tend to use Garageband or Reaper to playback backing-tracks to practice and record with - it works guite well. Sometimes I just use the Line6 Gearbox software to practice with, or I just plug into a Vox DA-5 portable practice amp. The later allows me to go out on the porch or the garden.

I need to get a pre-amp DI (like a PreSonus TubePre) so that my daughter who wants to learn the bass can be plugged into the Line6 at the same time.

At some point I'll pick up a small mixer so that we can capture more channels of audio.

Here's my Humble beginings. Fostex MR8 mkII. I need a good audio mixing program now, I'm leaning toward Cakewalk or Garageband. No Fender Neon Light though :(

I used to use Cubase SX for recording and have switched to Logic years ago and I've found it works perfectly well. :D

Yesterday we started back recording our second CD. We already had four songs recorded with a BOSS BR-1600, when a friend offered to help with the recording sessions.

On the earlier session I had two Shure SM58 for the overheads, SM57 for snare and AKG D 112 for the kick.

I wasn't really happy with the overheads, the cymbals sounded brittle, not airy. My friend came with two Nady RSM-5 ribbon mics , he used them for the overheads. What a different!

The cymbals had a nice airy sound, plus with some the room ambiance with a slight bleed of the entire drum set. The drums have a very full organic sound.

Well now we decided to scrap the other tracks and re-record. We were thinking about this any way now that we have a new keyboard player. Plus now I concentrate on playing.

My friend is really familiar with Roland multitracks, he wrote the VS-880EX guide for dummies book. He showed me some tips for recording yesterday. I'm excited :). http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Nady-RSM5-Ribbon-Studio-Microphone?sku=277401

Yeah, for overheads, condensors or ribbon mics are much better. The '57 isn't bad for the snare or kick, though.

I just upgraded from ACID Pro 6 to version 7. It has new amp models, FX from iZotope, a MIDI drum generator, and a new MIDI player plus a better mixing console.

I'm looking at the post-holidays sales to pick up a new set of headphones for mixing (yes, I know it's not the best method, but monitors aren't going to work in the space I have). If you have experiences you'd like to share regarding any of the cans listed below, I'd like to hear them. Currently under consideration:

Audio-Technica ATH-M40fs
Audio-Technica ATH-PRO5Vs
Sennheiser HD280
Sony MDR-7506

Feel free to suggest others.

I do a lot of home recording in my basement, I record all the band practices, I started out years ago with a tascam 4 trac casset recoder, that was ok for the time because it was a 3 piece band with a female front vocal, now the new band is larger, I record everything with a korg D888 digital 8 track studio recorder it has all the bells & whistles of which I don't use except for a little eco or reverb, we record everything live no over doubing, if the song is good it's a keeper & I'll mix it & burn it, if not we'll do it again & again till we get it right, I know there are many of you who might say "stupid sparky" stack you tracks, well you maybe right but this works for me, it's a no brainer, as long as I'm telling you all this stuff & I'm off on a tangent I'll give you the complete ride
BRENDA: front vocals with 1 mixable channel
WOLFEY: vocals & rythem guitar 2 mixable channels
PAULY: vocals & yamha ele. drums 3 mixable channels 1 channel for his non ele. high hat.....the ele. drums I bought just for recording
KENNY: bass guitar 1 mixable channel & owener of the D888
SPARKY: lead guitar 1 mixable channel
if you have any questions please feel free to contact me at
sparky349@sbcglobal.net I'll be happy to reply to any reasonable questions

Everything in the link at the bottom of my post was done with a BR-600 in either mine or my partners basement studio. It's alot of fun doing things yourself.
