I have a question....
whats a home recorder thats easy on the wallet and still sounds good?

Please and Thanks guys!!

First you must consider how you want to record:

Are you only going to record yourself?

Will you want to record a band?

Is your present computer powerful enough to record with, if so, are you computer competent?

Do you want to spend time learning to record, than recording?

1) Most likely my vocal and guitar
2) yeah if I had a band
3) don't know, its my step dads computer and sort of
4) if i can choose, an equal amount of both

please and thanks!

What's you budget ?

How many tracks do you want ?

Do you prefer software or hardware ?

Since's it's your step-dad's computer, I wouldn't recommend any PC recordering. The reason being that you could be in the middle of recording and he wants to use the computer.

The BOSS Micro BR http://www.rolandus.com/products/productdetails.aspx?ObjectId=818&ParentId=110 is pretty powerful small recorder. It will record in either MP3 or Wave format to SD Card and has USB options for around $230.

I started out on a Fostex X-10 4-track cassette, I still have it and my original demos.

A month ago I bought an E-MU 0404 USB 2.0 Audio/MIDI Interface and a shure M-58 mic.

It provides
  • Two E-MU XTC Mic/Line/Hi-Z preamps
(w/soft limiter and 48V phantom power)
  • Two 1/4" Balanced Outputs
  • 1/8" stereo speaker Output
  • 24-bit/96kHz optical S/PDIF In/Out
  • 24-bit/96kHz coaxial S/PDIF In/Out
  • One set of MIDI In/Out
  • One Stereo Headphone Output

For software it came with Cakewalk SONAR LE, and Steinberg's Cubase LE

The unit lets me plug in my MIDI keyboard, and has two 1/4 or xlr connections for sound in.

Cubase LE gives a 24-track direct to hard drive recorder.
Stuff seems to work pretty well, but I am not yet up to speed on using it.

Here is a link to the e-mu 0404 usb on musiciansfriend

Cubase LE came with the Lexicon Lamda. I didn't think it was as easy to use as the Sony products, but I can't use the Lexicon Pantheon reverb plug-in with anything but Cubase. That's a real shame because it's a great effect that can be tweeked all day and it comes from the people that made all of those legendary effects that the big time recording studios use.

I'm the Music Director for my church and I am doing all kinds of different projects from writing original music to doing background tracks for the video promos we do at our services. This is my modest setup in a spare bedroom.

I have a toneport ux1 from line 6,I run the latest version of live. But the main problem is it isn't very portable, thats why I bought an edirol R-09.It's about the size of a walkman with built in mics,it records in 24-bit wave,16-bit wave or mp3.I can record accoustic guitar, electric or singing and then load it onto my computer.I have to say it is the handest gizmo i've bought in a long time. :D

Modest?! It looks like a bigger, better setup than I ever dreamed of having. Sweet!

My gear:

Fostex 16 track, TC Electronics Finalizer,TC Helicon VoiceWorks , 2 Channel Tube Pre-Amp, Fostex CD Master Recorder, Samson Large Diaphram Condensor Mic, Various Shure mics, Event TR8 Monitors, Korg TR61 Synth.

An odd mix of expensive and cheap. Good enough for a home hobby studio. Oh yeah, did I mention the rats nest of cables....

I should really get a patchbay.
