OK, I'll bump too, with a minor update.
Amazon finally said they just shipped "The Everything Guide to Digital Home Recording" to me so have something to wait for in the mail :)

And I broke down and bought a Shure sm-57 to point at the amp.

Only GAS I now have left for home-recording is a decent pair of monitors.
and to really improve my skills at doing this multitrack recording.

I tried the Fender Amplitube software in a local shop and liked the amp models, but the stealth interface that comes with it wasn't working too well.

My recording techniques are pretty simple although I don't do much home recording. Usually I either place my Zoom H2 near the amp or connect my Line 6 Pocket Pod directly into the computer and use Audacity to record. Its simple and it works and suits my needs.

Wow, great songs! I wrote five songs on our first CD, and wrote all the songs for second CD, which I'm (still) mixing here at home.

This looks like a great thread Tony, I want to get back to recording again but I'll have to dig all my equipment out of the store room.
I got a lot of the old late 80's early 90's midi modules that I used with the C-Lab Creator and the Atari st ( yeah )
So I'll need a lot of advice on up-dating but first I'll take a look see at what I've got and see what can still be used.
So, I'll come back.
Cheers

Lately, I've been GASing more for recording gear than guitars and amps. I could still use a good (but not outrageously expensive) mic preamp and maybe some better plug-ins.

I love recording! There is just something about composing music, from nothing.

And I have the best of both worlds, recording wise, both a BR-600
http://www.rolandus.com/products/productdetails.php?ProductId=753&ParentId=110 & BR-1600 http://www.rolandus.com/products/productdetails.php?ProductId=574&ParentId=110, plus Reaperhttp://www.reaper.fm/ for PC recording.

With Reaper I use a Edirol UA-4FX: USB Audio/MIDI Interface http://www.rolandus.com/products/productdetails.php?ProductId=758&ParentId=114, along with a M-Audio Axiom 25 a 25-Key Semi-Weighted USB MIDI Controllerhttp://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/Axiom25.html for soft-synths.

If you're looking for more plugins try GERSIC.com http://www.gersic.com/plugins/index.php?daCat=1.

I recorded lead guitar & keyboard (soft-synth) track to the 'Buckeyes' track. I also re-named it 'Rockin' Rose Bowl'

It sounds like most of you folks use computer based recording solutions - I may be old school, but I like having the faders "in hand", especially when working on a mix.

The BOSS BR-1600 has knobs and such, and with all the various controllers now for PC recording, they have have faders and knobs. The plugin are act like FX and guitar/bass/keyboard models.

I use either a plug-in amp model or mic either my Fender Cyber-Twin, '68 BF Princeton or '63 Vibroverb RI.

Here's a test track using Green Day's 'Do You Know the Enemy' mic'ing my CT into my BR-600, and using my Epi Dot 335 - Sue Me

thouston, thanks for the tip on GERSIC.com. I'll start checking out plug-ins when I finally get off the road.

Whoot completed my little home recording setup with the addition of some small monitors
KrK Rokit RP-5 G2's

They are clean from 50Hz-21Khz, so can't handle really low frequencies like a kick drum or the low end of a piano,
But I don't play those :D and KrK makes a Sub if really needed.

I've been sitting here for the last couple of days listening to some of the home recording works done by people on SongCrafters . some finds there are amazingly well produced, hidden among the not so well made attempts :D

Congrats, Peter! My own home studio is advancing at a snail's pace. I too hope to add a pair of KRKs to my setup.

Finally bought some notation software yesterday so I can have a formal tool to write songs, hold ideas, and print lead sheets.
