Personally, I don't like those "relic" guitars. They should relic naturally, from hands on the neck, and a journey throughout life with their partner, the player. It has to have a history.

I'm beginning to agree with this stance more and more. I want my guitars to look nice. However, if they get marked up I want to own those marks...like "oh that is when I tripped on my amp", or "oh that what when I was trying to mimic Townshend"...and not "Oh that guitar came like that from the factory...". 8)

Yeah, most people don't like them, but I'm sure collectors or something out there do.

I feel sorry for guys with guitars with real hard-earned wear, dings, and scrapes.

Others will come up to them and say, "Hey, I like your new Road Worn. How do you like those MIM Strats?"

I'm not such a big fan of heavily relic'd guitars (unless they're that because they've been played for years). But there's nothing wrong with a little arm wear or something. I really, really like the necks on those Road Worns. It's just when people go overboard, then it sort of defeats the purpose and makes you look like a poser.

I suppose like much else today, too many into instant gratification. So you buy the marks of years of experience rather than doing it. There seem to be fewer and fewer these days who think that the way you attain something is by working at it the old fashioned way.

But in the end, I suppose nothing is hurt by it as long as they don't try to pass one off as something it isn't.

I think that statement captures exactly why a lot of people think reliced guitars are kinda lame...

+1. It would be odd to meet someone at a gig, in a shop, etc. with the same relic look. Time is what makes your guitar, your guitar! :D

It's a "fashion." You either like the looks of it (I do) or you don't.

You either buy one (I won't) or you don't.

The "instant gratification" is a good explanation. Who wants to work at anything these days?

This is what my Strat looked like after 25 years of gigging steady :

The sad part of store bought Relics is that there are no stories to go along with the dings and scars.

What are you going to say? "Yeah, the guy at Guitar Center handed it down to me and I bought it. Good times."
