I was wandering online the other day and out of curiosity started reading some information about Cigar Box guitars and they sounded like a fun thing to make. Has anyone here ever made one, and if so what did you think of it?

Yep, a blues performer James "Super Chikan" Johnson makes them as well as ceiling fan guitars, gas can guitars etc. I met him at the Pocono Blues Festival. He's a fun person and a great Bluesman.

I think there were many of the Blues greats who played Cigar Box guitars including Blind Willie Johnson if I am not mistaken. Here is some info from my YouTube Channel. Good Luck in the search.

Born Sam Hopkins March 1912, Died January 1982. Bluesman Sam "Lightnin" Hopkins was a direct link and a key figure in the transition from country blues to city blues. He recorded for a host of labels and was one of the most prolific blues artists of the twentieth century. He recorded as a popular artist after World War 2 and was rediscovered by folkorists in 1959, prompting resuegence in his popularity and leading him to worldwide fame as a blues guitarist and singer. When Hopkins was eight years old, he made his fisrt guitar out of a cigar box and chicken wire. His brother Joel taught him the basic chords although it was under the wing of Texas bluesman Blind Lemon Jefferson, that Hopkins began his real blues education. It was stated that Hopkins possesed "a bruised whiskey voice" that had "a clipped but expressive sound". Hopkins bridged the gap between rural and urban styles.

My thoughts exaclty. I have a guitar neck from my first guitar (R.I.P) I thought would be good to use and then get some wood to use for the body.

My friend, and bluesman James 'Super Chikan' Johnson http://www.myspace.com/superchikanandthefightingcocks makes cigar box guitars, and makes oil can guitars.

I met James a while back when he was at Pocono. He played in the tent and had a huge crowd. He told me about a guitar he made out of an old broken ceiling fan. He was playing a BC Rich. I think he was the only one there that had one. He sounded great. He can make almost anything sound great. His shows and stories make you laugh all the way home.
