I've got an Am Deluxe V neck strat that I picked up in February and it plays great. However, every time I play it I end up with gray metalic residue on my finger tips. I've been playing since 1975 and have never had this problem with any other guitar. I'm using Fender Bullets and Ernie Ball strings now and in the past and am sure its not them. Does anyone else have this problem? Any ideas what may be the cause?

Sounds like dirty strings or fretboard.

I clean it and check the set-up when I change the strings which is roughly monthly. I'm beginning to wonder if Fender got some fret wire with an off-specification alloy. I need to turn over a few more stones before I go there. Thank you all for the ideas.

you got your strat in February this year, you been using the same strings since 1975, have you been using the same brand of strings on a strat scale length guitar before this?
maybe try change your string gauge...

i play an acoustic with martin strings and i get it too. it's the same for all the strings i've bought. i press pretty hard (it's a cheap acoustic and has bad action) and i slide a lot. it doesn't really bother me though so i just leave it at that.

I bet if you use some sting cleaner/conditioner it would stop it from happening.

I forgot that I had the frets polished a couple days ofter I got it. It could be that it's polishing residue in the corner where the fret meets the board.
I'll try a more thorough cleaning when I change the strings.

Thanks for the replies!
