Hi there,

Just wondering if there's and easy way to tell what finish your guitar has.

My neck is smooth but not sticky and have worn away a wee patch on part of it from playing - would this indicate a nitro finish? It's a J Bass, MIA btw.

Any ideas how to tell what the body finish is? Mine is in black and it seems quite thin (there's a chip under the scratch plate around one of the screw holes) and has like a layer of white underneath...it's hard to describe.

Any help would be great :)

What type of bass do you have,
American standard, Deluxe, Highway 1 or vintage ?Top of page click on
products, find your bass and click on specs.
It's that simple.

Ah see now thats the problem! I'm not sure haha, I bought it second hand, I think it's a standard but its a 1990 model (I believe).

Well, then it's probably a poly finish.
If the serial number is on top of the headstock it's not a vintage.
Highway 1 did not exists in the '90s.
If it's an American bass my guess would be standard.

Greetings,

Peter

That "chip" can be filled with wood putty and either sanded and touched up or just leave filled, where it's under the pickguard.
