I'll go with Freddie King or Albert Collins. Freddie probably wins. So my vote doesn't count.

Hopefully this thread stays nice and civil...

Would it be impolite to choose the slave traders. It just wouldnt have happened without them.

Seriously Muddy Waters invented what we know as a modern rock'n'roll or Blues band.

He was the first person to combine bass, piano, harp, guitar and drums in that format.

bb, albert and the wolf were all good but only copied muddy, as did everything else that came after him from slayer to the beatles.

SRV and clapton shouldnt be mentioned alongside muddy. Theres far better playing from Johnny Winter than either of them. Never mind Alvin Lee or Pete Green of whom BB King said 'Hes the only person to give me a cold shiver'. Later asked greeny to record a album with him, greeny knocked him back. Clapton said he'd do it, BB replied 'sorry mate you aint got it like him'.

Theres better out there that non of us have heard of. You can take that as fact.

Muddy Waters or BB King. Both are good players. I had to choose BB King though, I just liked his style better. All mentioned are very good for what they play. This is why I hate polls, never can pick just one.

I agree with you there Niki EC and SRV don't compare to some others. Johnny Winter, Peter Green just to name a few. Where talking Blues here.

I think blues, more than any other genre other than perhaps jazz, is the most subjective as far as "best". So many different flavors and while the early ones (W. C. Handy, Robert Johnson, Lead Belly) were great there were so many later who honed blues into various styles and drove the blues in so many directions. Chicago blues, Texas blues, Delta blues, Piedmont blues, Jump blues, etc, etc. I don't think there can truly be one king. I just dig it all.

Hence my initial ending with hopefully this thread stays nice and civil.

Very Cool. You do your homework for a young man. Learn all you can from the old timers, but be sure you delve into all different kinds of music. I didn't and I wish I got more into Jazz.

Now for the poll. It just sucks. King of the Blues.
How about Son House, Bukka White, David "Honeyboy" Edwards, John Lee Hooker , Johnny Winter, Lightnin' Hopkins, Blind Lemmon Jefferson, Earl Hooker, Luther Allison and hundreds of others. This poll needs to dig back a ways for a King. All those mentioned borrowed from Robert Johnson.

As much as I like the players mentioned especially Muddy Waters, the poll is far from "King" material.

Robert Johnson or more properly, Son House.

Without them, there would be no "royal line of succession."

How dare ye ask a question like that

Well, from the ones that you mentioned I voted for BB King even though I much prefer to listen to Muddy Waters or Stevie Ray Vaughn. It is just an impossible question to answer really and it depends on someones individual opinion.

I voted for BB King because of his tone, vibrato, vocals and on stage peformance. I have seen a video of BB King and Gary Moore playing "The Thrill is Gone" and BB starts of by playing just one note, and straight away you know it is BB because of his tone and vibrato.

For a musician to be able to play just one note on the entire neck of the guitar, and for the listener to be able to 100% know that your listening to BB King is just fantasic. I also voted for BB because of his unique way of moving out of the traditional pentatonic scale and blues box, to play a whole range of other notes that sound unreal, he can literally tell a story with his guitar.

There is no answer for this question, but the young guns have the best one with Robert Johnson. SRV and Clapton cant compare with Winters and Green a ridicules statement from two of the forums sharpest guys.
