Well, I am planning on repairing/restoring the above mentioned Ibanez. It has been through hell, and needs some love.

I don't have much experience refinishing guitars, so i bought a few junkers from the pawnshop across the street from work, and am gonna use them to practice on.

Playing is like eating, doing a set-up is like cooking. The more you get into your guitars, the more you want to do it all by yourself. I am in the process of learning to do my own maintenance. Each time I change my strings, I try to master another aspect of the set-up.

Claude.

Well, seeing that you asked, CBS Fender first authorized me in September of 1974 (as did Guild) to service their products.

True, true, but it's also NEW to a lot of "Forum Friends" and I thought it might spark some useful sharing of information.

When I was 17 (30 years ago) I learned that Brian May built his own guitar and I was inspired to build my own bass. I was hooked and became a luthier, doing my own repairs and set-ups ever since. I also had a guitar building and repairing company for 5 years.

It is very liberating knowing that I'm not going to get duped by a repair man and can make minor adjustments for string gauge changes and humidity changes for free.

If you can use a metal rule and a feeler gauge and have a little patience, you can do your own set-ups.

When I received the Esteban it's action was so high and the strings were like rubber bands. So while changing to a better brand of stings I went to work on the saddle. It plays a lot better now and stays in tune too. But I did get a little greedy when shaving the saddle and have some fret buzz on the e and B strings on the higher end of the fret board so I'm going to have to take another shot at it. I also recently set the intonation on my Squire Strat. I have that for a little over a year and it has never sounded better. I really enjoy working on them and will continue to do so.

You are brave and adventureous, Chet and other noble do-it-yourself-ers.

Personally, 'do minor tweaks, but use Third Coast Guitars in Chicago when wanting "the big setup" it done truly right is important. Leave it Saturday, pick it up Wednesday or vicey-versey and when tech ('prefer Andon Davis) is done with one, "It's a mutha-beautiful guitar," to paraphrase Donald Sutherland in "Kelly's Heroes."

I have started doing mine as well. My friends like how mine is set up so they have started asking me to set up theirs as well. I might have to start my own business! :)

+1!
my one guitar is my most valuable posession, so I almost worship it.
I know lots of people do it, but I don't dare to lay a finger on the insides of my guitar, although I think it needs some fingers layed on it. not bringing it to a shop though. Too sacred and valuable!
makes me  just to think about it!

All smaller setups I make by myself like:

neckadjustments
string high
intonation
pick up modifying

Cheers

I love that movie.

I usually send my basses out to be worked on because I don't know anything about setting up.

However I got Gary Willis' 101 Bass Tips which includes "how to" advice for minor adjustments and set up procedures. At least I have a guideline now.

Will be especially helpful now that I've moved out to the sticks!

where's that "chicken" smilie??

Over the years I have acquired a lot of woodworking tools so I do all my own setup and repairs on all my guitars and other equipment, (unless its covered under warrantee). If you're curious about my woodworking, I have this cheesy website I setup a few years ago to serve as a gallery of sorts:
