Congrats to Neil and Buzz for landing on the moon, provided it wasn't a hoax.

Anyway, I think this is a great moment to contemplate on the achievements of man. Congratulations, scientists, you now know all about the moon, but can you tell me about your neighbor 6 houses down the block??

Here are pictures from the Lunar Recon Orbiter that show the Apollo landing sites and a trail of footprints at the Apollo 14 landing site. Proof positive.

I'm sorry but those pictures are too vague and inconclusive to prove anything.
I'm undecided about the conspiracy theory regarding the moon landing. I wholeheartedly want to believe that man landed on the moon, but cant. Theres always going to be that element of doubt. Particularly when you hear ex-nasa scientists say things like "theres a layer of radiation around the earth (van allen belt), that we cant pass today. How could we have got through it back then. All we had was tin foil and adapted diving suits".

During one of the missions special reflectors were placed on the Moon so that scientists could measure the distance from Earth to the Moon by firing a laser at them. They were used by American as well as Russian scientists. I think the Russians would have been the first to debunk anything given the chance.
As far as the Van Allen Belt issue, the Apollo missions all passed through it at a rate of speed fast enough that exposure was not an issue.
Not to mention that 9 of the 12 men that walked on the Moon are still with us and how many of the 400,000 or so people that worked on the missions. Does anyone really believe that many people could be involved in a hoax and still keep it quiet.

didnt they have a few more guys in the module and one came equipped with a movie camera.

If we want to talk about conspiracy theories, the best is iraq has wmd lol...but back to the moon, i believe we landed and the proof is in the astronauts who tell it. I would highly doubt they would lie

One in the command module that stayed in orbit and two in the lander. The camera was externally mounted on the lander before it left Earth. There were also handheld cameras for stills and video.

'Zactly.

Suppose they sat down in the '60s and considered the possibility of faking the whole thing. They'd contemplate the endless thousands of people all over the world who'd have to be in on it; the impossibility of keeping them all on-side forever; try to work out how to simulate a signal coming from the supposed position of the craft if it wasn't really up there (how?)... They'd soon decide it was just simpler to go to the moon instead.

They spent decades failing to assasinate Castro. Didn't bother to fake WMDs in Iraq. Think they could pull off a hoax as big as the moon landings? C'mon...

The doubters need to tell us what evidence would convince them.

Cheers - C

I gotta say, I don't believe it was a hoax. I mean, if you send a rocket up there, where are you going to hide it ? The mission was being tracked by the radio telescope at Jodrel Bank and that was a pretty powerful thing.
Having said that. Those pictures we saw of mission control, all those guy's sat in rows staring at computers, wasn't exactly what it seemed.
Apparently only half a dozen ( if that ) were actually being used, down at the front and less powerful than our home pc's of today. The rest of it was just show.
That was from one of the top directors who was there speaking on a science channel a while back.
Yes, it was a miracle they did it, mixed with a lotta luck. 8)

Ah, indeed!

And on the same point, there's a nice Australian movie with Sam Neill called The Dish, about the tracking station down under which relayed signals from the craft over to NASA when it was round the far side of the world.

The signal from the Apollo had to be located by triangulation - how the heck could you fake that?

Great film, BTW.

Cheers - C

But then again, just as you cant prove anything is real, you cannot prove anything isnt.
