I have recently been practicing for an hour a day working on technique and using a booklet on blues. How many hours do you practice a day? And how many hours do you spend playing what you are praticing in a week? After going from 1/2 hour a day to an hour each day I am realising that there is so much more that I could pratice if I had 2 or 3 hours spare a day, but right now I am just trying to remain consistant.

Good question.

I am recently coming out of a practicing dry spell.

I found that if I put into my schedule a specific time for practice, it all falls into place much easier.

Through the middle of May I would try to get in 30 minutes or so each day, but then the phone would ring, the dogs would want to go outside, etc.

What I do now is take the time I would have spent watching the news at night and spend that time practicing. My goal is to get to a full hour before the end of summer. As we all know, the more you practice = the better you become = the more fun you have.

I have been spending about 10 minutes doing some chords and small scale work, then spend the last 20 minutes going over a specific song I may be trying to learn. The closer I get to nailing the song, the more likely I am to run over the 30 minute time, so I have proven to myself that I "can" practice for more than 30 minutes.

One additional change that has really helped is that my son-in-law and I have been getting together a day or two a week. We run different things off each other and I actually learn a lot by doing this. It also allows me to sponge off of his talent. Fortunately he hasn't grown stale on waiting for to pick up something new. It takes me longer than him to grasp something new!

Honestly, I always thought that as I got older I'd have more time for my self indulgent activities, but find that isn't the case.

Monday through Friday I spend about an hour a day while the weekends I spend more time. I wish I could spend more time but the Chore and Honey-do lists are long by the time the weekend starts.

I used to 'practice' quite a lot when I first started playing at 22yr, back in '72. After I formed my first band in '74 'Visions of the Mind', I felt I 'played' more, than I would practice playing.

I had already taught myself 'ear training', being able to figure out the key of songs from records, so I spent many hours learning songs/solos. I still learn songs and solos to this day.

I play for 30 minutes a day at least but will usually play all day long wherever I am. I allways cary a guitar with me.. But I don't practice, just play, practicing to me, is whenever I'm trying out new stuff (which I do all the time)

I, a life-long "night person", have been shocking my friends and family by getting up on weekdays at 5am to get an hour of practicing in before getting ready for work. I usually just do scales because the brain's not working so well at that time, and always have the headphones on so as not to bother the neighbors. Then I work on whatever song I'm learning during the evening.

I agree with previous posters, consistency is key - it's not like finals in college where you can slack off for a few weeks and then just stay up all night and do it all at the last minute.

I agree completely: I would call what I do 'playing' rather than 'practicing.' I probably play for between 45 minutes and an hour every day, although that varies considerably. Some days I'll play for four hours; other days, just a few chords.

I usually practice about 30 minutes a day and try to play anywhere from 2 to 3 hours at some point in the day.

It varies depending on a number of things, but I do practice guitar and keyboards every day.

I play for about an hour every morning. Back in the old days when I started out, I practiced about four hours a day but it's not really practice now, I just play what I like.

I practice an hour-3 hours daily.

Well, not all of it is practice, some of it is just messing around with chords, some is just making up improv to backing tracks.. either way I have fun. :]

Daily, but how much time varies.
I keep my strat on its stand right next to my work desk in the living room (nice part of working from home :D ), any time there is a quite moment I grab the axe are play.

Evenings & weekends are extra time when I try to get in some more serious practice.

And I keep a strat by my TV watching chair.
Lot of time I'll just noodle around some scales while watching some shows on DVD.

It does seem to get hard to put the thing down.

It depends on what is going on. Sometimes I'll play for 2 hours in a day and sometimes not at all. A lot of times I'll just break it out after I get home from work to relax.

I used to practice at least 6 to 8 hours a day somrtimes more. There were times I fell a sleep with the guitar in my hands.Right up until I got hurt I would need at least 45 minutes to warm up before playing hard.
