i was trying to get my acoustic's neck less sticky (it's a poly finish :P ) so i tried sanding it and now it just looks all scratched so i put some wood/ leather oil and now it's as sticky as ever and it's scratched. i like the relic look but it doesn't even look like that. help[/quote]

oh dear - i hope it wasnt and expensive guitar.

I've heard steel wool and lemon oil is what you're supposed to use - but don't take my word for it.

well it wasn't expensive (about 130) but it is my first and only guitar. i can't believe i was so stupid i knew you weren't supposed to do that. DANG COLD MEDICINE! it makes me crazy. i think my guitar needs a restraining order from me when i am under the influence of cold pills. i guess the more i look at it the better it is. i love vintage stuff but now it looks like i have an old neck on a new body (i'm too afraid to make the body match so i'm gonna leave it.) i've been polishing it so it isn't too noticeable. it's just kinda matte. oh well

most good guitars don't have poly on there necks, they are striped and then have a good pore filler applied. However they tend to get dirty,so you really have to pay attention to there cleanning. Please don't do this to a new guitar it should only be done on a beater.

Exactly why us old guys keep saying "NO" to self relic'd guitars. It's not easy and the odds of damage are high.

Just Say No To Relicing Kids!!!

I bet when you started sanding on it, the sanding dust started to make this chaulky white powder type of stuff, am I right??? If so, that guitar is most likely finished in polyester.

I don't think you sanded it enough to get through the poly. On low-dollar guitars the finish is pretty thick, especially when they use polyester, it's cheap and the more coats they put on, the more it starts to look like glass. Your gonna need to get some sand paper that's somewhere around a medium-grit and just start sanding the hell out of it. It'll probably take you alittle while until you can get down to the bare wood.

Are you sure encouraging him to keep going is the right thing to do?

okay dudes just CHILL! i wasn't trying to relic i will never try to relic any of my guitars artificially! i was just trying to increase playibility. i was under the influence of cold pills! i polished it with wood oil which finally sunk in and it looks great it's just a little less shiny and MUCH easier to play the problem is solved and i'm not going to further sand etc...

p.s. it is a polyester finish

Well, if you want a slick neck you have to get down to the wood. Bare wood is the slickest you can get.

Anything worth doing is worth doing right.

This has nothing to do with relicing.

I just did this to one of my Strats last night. It took a really long time but I think I am gonna like it. I am really happy with the way it came out. I want to play it a bit more before I decide If I am going to do it to my other two Strats.

Amazing. Sometimes asking before doing is a good thing. Even under the influence of cold meds.

Personally I stay away from all of guitars/amps when I have to use medication that alters my thinking patterns.
