former punk band guitarist at your service.... fender hss strat.. billie joe plays one. so did tom delonge before he went gibson es-333. (tom had a custom made fender with only a humber in the bridge btw) hss basically means: humbucker in the bridge, single coil in the middle, single coil in the neck. heres a link for example.

http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/prod ... sku=501160

i was gonna give you the link to the page on the actual fender web site... but going to musicians friend also gives you an idea of the price. this guitar is, without a doubt, the EXACT guitar you will be looking for. go to youtube and watch some videos of those bands.

GO_ME!!! - I would definitely get the Strat. You get more tonal options with it, in case you ever branch out from punk, so that's just a plus.

I've also played a Telecaster with a humbucking pickup at the bridge in it only, and I've played HSS Strats. The Telecaster sounded fat, no doubt, but it didn't seem to be worth it to me.

Try both guitars out, if you can.

very true. i was into blink, sum, alkaline trio, bad religion, social D, mxpx, nofx, greenday, bouncing souls, you name it.

but now im older, im married! and iv learned to appreciate where rock music came from. im playing the blues, gospel and contemporary christian music and making my own music, which is very laid back compared to those bands. but when i first started i had a HSS. good luck to you.

btw... was the one humbucker tele youre talking about an avril lavigne tele by chance?

Yep. It had that stupid star on the neck. :d

It didn't sound bad at all, though. Especially through a Champ. ;-]

Eh, I hate that whole style/"genre" of music, so I'll agree.

I've played punk before, although never in a "serious" band. My rock/blues/rockabilly/country band is composed of a bunch of strange fellows, and we tend to warm up with punk covers. As much as it is a cliche, I think it's fair to say that any guitar will work fine because "punk is an attitude/lifestyle."

But if you're looking to play punk exclusively, there are a few notable instruments that have been used by many of the greats: the humbucker-equipped strat, the telecaster (Joe Strummer!) and the Gibson Les Paul Junior. The strat will probably, as has already been said, give you the most tonal options, but a Telecaster is probably more versatile in that it's simpler and can better take a beating. Most punk players tend to favour humbuckers, but that too is a matter of preference. Virtually any Fender will get you the sounds you need to melt faces...

I can't believe I wrote that much and said, well, not much.

Don't forget to try out the Squier Classic Vibe guitars. I played one of the Sunburst 60's Strats and it felt pretty good.

Oh yea.. The John 5 looks pretty descent as well.

I have only liked 2 punk bands in my life. The Ramones who were 2 minutes of fun and Green Day probably the most talented punksters and writers, and no I dont consider the Clash punk.

Of course, the general rule of thumb is to go to the music store, try out as many guitars as you can and pick the one that feels and sounds right to you!

The HSS Strat would probably be a good place to start, since it has the versatility of both the single coil and humbucking pickups. Having a humbucker will help you to get a fatter, heavier sound (as opposed to the single coils which are generally brighter and more trebly).

But really just about any solid body electric could do the job. Green Day uses Les Pauls these days (I think), Joe Strummer used a Tele. So try them all out and see what you like...

Fender Stratocaster, Mustang, or Juguar. Squire makes these models too, depends on what your price range is.

IMO I would buy a guitar with a HSS configuration, (humbucker, single coil, single coil). They are more versatile in case your music preference changes.
