When it comes to OSs I think of them like screw drivers. Depending on the job at hand that’s the one I’ll use. Some do the job better, and some don’t suit the job at all. I don’t really care about the fancy handle. If you wait long enough it’ll get screwed in the end, and then you’ll have to move on to the next job, and get a new tool. Sometimes one tool will do several jobs, and sometimes that one tool will only do one job, or maybe not at all. :?
It’s all pretty screwy.

I'm not alone.

M$ Desktop drivers were originally intended to work on older versions than Mountain Lion. They worked fine with recent OSes as well though the helper files must be added manually.

With El Capitan, Sierra and High Sierra SIP and SKEL must be turned off before install.

Starting with Mojave Apple will kill legacy software rendering Microsoft hardware totally useless.

Safari 12.0 already killed Java, Silverlight and Shockwave extensions shortly after Apple deprecated them.

2023 will mark the end for the Flash plugin as Adobe plans to deprecate it.

Computer software is like a dog chasing it’s tail. Way back before the dinosaurs, even with Windows 95, I remember lesser PCs developing games and productive software some of which was amazing for it’s time. Video messaging could have and did have better quality than Skype (kind of a waste of HD IMO), queries allowed you more custom and less invasive filtration for surfing with a browser, software you owned was often less dependent on third parties, and a whole lot more. My state of the art Pentium 120 had a pro 3D animation design program (can’t recall the name). It also had an excellent Midi mixer by Ensoniq, and other goodies lost to browser changes and security concerns. Are things slicker today? Yup! When they work, if they work, and for as long as they work. Planned obsolescence works, however.
Computers, by design, are one of those technologies that will never mature unlike other technologies.

Nothing’s changed in that arena, and resolving the problem of the user dealing with crap extensions and such, hardware and software upgrades, and compatibility issues will keep returning until the job is taken over in a central location that provides it all. It’s not a new idea, but it is a complicated one, and there are benefits and disadvantages to it. I wouldn’t rule one source control out in this Orwellian world, and we’re starting to see some of it now. Get your piggy bank ready. Things are looking pretty ruff as the technology changes. :? Some may benefit in the future, but as we chase the tail. except for scraping the surface with bumps and grinds, it won’t be us.

Excuse me while I plug my vintage flying car in.

So we are way off topic here, but I have to say I don’t understand this at all. Do you mean that all the various hardware manufacturers are consipiring to code their drivers in a way that renders them impossible to use with Apple computers? That’s a lot of manufacturers. Sounds illegal. And that ‘$’ belongs with your overpriced product, not mine.

I don't mean that, mate.

Since Apple decided to drop support for 32-bit software for their macOS platform developers should comply with the Cupertino giant's new strategy by updating their apps with the 64-bit architecture. For a couple of reasons the majority of software houses chose to slam the door by stopping development of their legacy apps rather than dealing with Apple's SLA.

My desktop set is 15 years old, hence's now an occasion to upgrade it. :)

Actually, my desktop is for the most part great to use for it’s age, and I can still find enough reasons to use and keep it, but I am also forced to upgrade for other usage.

Legacy and 32 bit is part of the reason. Like others here I get offers to update to the latest greatest versions and I balk only because I need a new computer, and I will then use a 64 bit compatible copy of the 32 bit version presently used or can not use or soon will not use. As ghost_of_strings mentioned, we’re off topic so I’ll leave it at that and add this:

Medieval helpdesk. Priceless. Excuse me from ROTFL. Thanks, for posting that ghost. On the other hand, I’ll never be able to look at a book the same way ever again.

I used to get frustrated engineers phoning me when my crew used to fill out a repair form, and they would simply write “broken headset”. Those knuckleheads could run $100,000 plus gear, but couldn’t explain a headset fault. LOL.

I discovered this 1999 song after being late for the party. The lyrics line about lying had to do with lying about his age to get a job for a bar. In any event, I thought the song was great.
