What great vintage video, Marky. When I first started in the TV industry a held over Kinescope tv to film setup was still in the station, and, after I started, a retrofit electronic editing gadget (Editec) was added to one of the existing video tape recorders until they became plentiful or outdated.

However, before that, recording on film brought us the large cameras such those seen in The Chuck Berry video. This is what they were:

Moving cameras, especially large ones, on a wheeled tripod takes a lot of skill learned over time. One can only imagine how hard it would have been to track Chuck. I didn’t get to use those monsters though. I’m not that old.

I'm glad you liked the video, FSB. I watched it again and paid attention to the cameras. They were monsters and, I agree, the cameramen did a great job of following Chuck. I noticed that they have covers on the film reels. Were they used to prevent light from getting in or noise from getting out?

Thanks for the history links. Very interesting. :)

Glad you found interest in that, Marky. If that video was, as I believe, from England you might be looking at a very rare and historical video showing those cameras. J. Arthur Rank (movie mogul) brought 3 Electronicams to England, but said the quality was terrible (but, still better than Kinescope). It didn’t really matter because the company’s future would come to an end soon after,

Those things, apparently were noisy and the magazines (here the extra thick casings) I believe are called blimps. They were built to encase the film camera, and to prevent the mechanical sound from leaking into the stage mics. The fuzzy muff (aka blimp) is likely meant to isolate the sound even more. This is the answer more or less assumed from the related website, and although it is true, as you said, that light leakage could be a concern (but, seldom), this design seems to have addressed that possibility, and it had been avoided because one can see the Electronicam without that fuzzy muff in well lit situations. :D

I've always enjoyed Jim Messina's guitar work.

The guy on keyboards is Gabe Dixon his solo stuff is really good. Look him up if you have a minute.
He usually is L&M's opening act.

Loggins & Messina. Enjoyed that, Mike.

Some years back I was working on a show in the studios when a religious group brought a guest duo from just outside the city to the station. Two brothers. They blew us away right from the beginning. They had that L&M vibe both with playing and vocals, and they really were that good. The trouble is I tried to get them to go forward and to move further with their musical interest by suggesting they go see some connected friends and associates of mine who had built a well respected multitrack studio that later sold their Neve consoles to AC/DC’s road crew.

Sadly, like others we know, these brothers were content in their lives to not pursue fame and fortune, while others less talented chase their dream which is worthy, but difficult at best.

We talked about how often the public loses out that which could be interpreted as an obligation for the talent to share the gift given. Thankfully, we do get a special treat from time to time. Loggins & Messina was a treat.

Here’s another example IMHO:
