Sonny James also gone to Rock and Roll Heaven. That's crazy. Just the other day I pulled one of his LPs that I picked up at a used record sale some time back so I could digitize it. Strange that almost to the day, without knowing about his passing, I decided to dub it over. RIP SJ.

FSB
Thanks. For letting us know, Rollie.

Sonny had 26 number 1 hits and 16 were in a row on Billboard. Not too shabby, huh?!

Really enjoyed that dude's assessment of today's popular music. Software has, for some time, definitely changed the game when reaching for that hit song (or successful TV/movie script) Before that, unless you had natural born talent like Dylan, you read about how to pen a song, learned by example (which I know even Dylan did), :wink:learned from experts, or put your music in the hands of a genius like Phil Spector or Mutt Lange.

Formulas for hit songs have existed for some time, coming from places like the Brill Building and Hitsville along with Sun Records, and most every major recording studio East, West, North, or South. In a world before sampling became the norm, we had guitar riffs repeated across songs and labels. Listen to the Mills Brothers and you won't have trouble hearing their signature sound; meanwhile, the Funk Brothers and Wrecking Crew were just as likely to repeat a riff elsewhere or, perhaps, be copied. While all songs were not formulated many were, hence that Sound (be it Philly, Motown, or any other). But, variety existed, and music evolved. Since the early days of Tin Pan Alley there has been a select few who have been successful at writing a majority of hits. Ask Carole King and a slew of others. That's the difference, there were many others amongst a large variety of music to chose from. Not so much on both accounts today. (Here on the Forum we speak of the musicians and vocalists departing this world; but, the loss of some of the greatest songwriters has been equally as tragic, and they have a uniqueness of their own never to be seen again.).

Along comes MTV and Much Music. Major labels and bands soon made it to the air with videos, and it didn't take long to find out that the brainwashed public would watch the idiot box, accept less in their musical choice, with hunks and booties all doing their Fossey dance, replacing historically developed music and well executed artistic lyrics. Once in a while a gem is found; but, the formula is in the tube, and it needs to be reproduced time and again, and cheaply. It's a drug that has it's following, and the potency will be increased along with a larger distribution dosage. Am I against the hunks and booties videos? I can take it or leave it, only don't supply it with downgraded music IMHO/YMMV

Move forward to today, and your video, SBLS, pretty much says it all.

Cheers!
FSB

Good choice for a favourite, SBLS. Carrack has a great voice and, at times, his talent is underrated IMHO.

Here's an up and comer:

Whoo boy! That's a rotten kettle of fish, Rollie, and a thorn in my side. In this quasi democratic country called Canada - industry and the government load the dice with Canadian content to the point where filters and censorship no longer reflect fairness and the wishes of the public. The argument is that it promoted Canadian talent. The other argument is that they are a selected group, and also distribution is controlled elsewhere. All good points, but different.IMHO.

Aside from all of the usual copyrights and universal regulations, we have the CRTC (similar to your FCC) dictating how and what they deem Canadians need or don't need in audio and video enjoyment, to be brief. All in the best interests of Canadians, the CRTC is a heated debate that is constantly under the microscope. Other government agencies and World trade agreements take over where the CRTC may or may not be involved.

Then there is CBC, a government Radio/TV network (with a large share and partial operation of Sirius/XM Canada) which may have something to do with companies like Pandora and CNN not laying a foot here in the Great White North. Protectionism is the word here.

Rollie, in one's own country there are many reasons why a video is blocked. It sometimes relates to protect the originator, the country (perceived correctly or incorrectly), a person receiving the content (whether moral or other conditions exist), legal reasons, technicalities, a slew of other good and bad reasons, but, increasingly outfits like the World Trade Organization write rules that, for example, presently has European nations worried. In some cases (and we are starting to see it flourish on this side of the Ocean) industry has creeped into their government jurisdiction and the democratic process is being superceded by trade agreements at the court level. This means another level and a more effective one of enforcing regulation. This includes placing limits on one's use of audio and video. Is this the case here? Probably not, but it could happen.

So. there you have it. Having attended government broadcast hearings that related to some of this, I can only tell you that an easy answer is not available but maybe the answer is here.

My pleasure, Rollie.

With all of my lengthy posts, I should likely be censored, seen, and not heard. 8) FSB
