Im trying to make a replica of the tele he used on LZ's 1st album but left handed.

Is there a way to take a maple fretboard and seitch it out or is that too much

Jimi, I'm going to be honest with you here: when I read that I just flat didn't believe it. I though you must have made a mistake.

So I have just been through the entire online catalog - and of course you're absolutely right. No left-handed Tele's with rosewood fingerboards at all. Wow!

In fact, very few left-handed Teles of any description: your options are extremely limited. Here's Page's Tele:

To make a left-handed version of that, with or without the paintjob, you are as you say going to have to put an aftermarket neck on a Natural finished body (or is it Honey Blonde?), and the only left-handed one of those I can see is the American Vintage. That's an expensive way to get a guitar!

WDMusic do a couple of left-handed rosewood 'board Tele necks (note: no Fender logo on Jimmy's Tele):

I've used WD's necks and their quality is good. Frankly, Fender are not trying hard for your custom on this one, and I'd be tempted to buy the body and parts from WD too. If you are planning on the whole Jimmy Page paint scheme you may as well buy an unfinished body and do the paintwork and lacquering yourself.

Warmoth would be another supplier for those timbers: probably more expensive.

Fender's Custom Shop is obviously another way to go, as you mentioned, though I'm doubtful they'd do the artwork for you.

Any of that help?

Good luck - C

This is a cool idea!

If I were going to do it, I would not use a Fender body or neck and sacrifice authenticity for price. As was pointed out above, Page's Tele doesn't bear the Fender logo and, frankly, Tele bodies are rather generic anyway.

I would look at a website like Warmoth or another one I've heard good things about, Guitarfetish, and buy a Tele body and rosewood neck. You should be able to find a good body and neck (left handed, of course) for less than $500 -- maybe a lot less, depending...

What might prove to be expensive is vintage (either actual or vintage-style) hardware and pickups. These can be had from many places; you can spend as much or as little as you like.

The real expense would be the paintjob. My first idea was to find an automotive painter who has some experience doing detail jobs. Maybe one of those guys who pinstripes choppers. Give him a bunch of detailed photos and let him go to work. That should get you close.

Then slap it all together, plug it in and rock.

If you did it right, this would net you a great guitar for a fraction the cost of an American Deluxe.

I'm no expert, but I would probably try and find one of the Fender "vintage reissue" sets that some shops are hawking. You can probably find a set like this at your local guitar shop:

If that Page Tele is indeed a proper Nocaster, you can't get much closer than this. If I were you I'd stay away from the temptation of hotter pickups and opt for lower-output vintage-style ones instead.

Definitely go with Vulkan's advice. The Nocaster p'ups are amazing. I just gave some LZ1 songs a try on my Nocaster p'up loaded Tele and it sounds perfect. You may want to swap out the neck pickup because it has a very narrow range and you may just neglect it for that reason. However, if you like the Stones, keep that sucker in.
