I completely disagree with a lot of the opinions on this thread, but hey, that's why they're called opinions.

I had the pleasure of meeting John Mayer and I gladly had him sign my guitar. Regardless of whatever opinion anyone else has of him, he has personally inspired me as a guitarist through his own improvements, as well as pointed me in the direction of even more inspiring guitarists. Huge influence. Everyone has their reasons for wanting to do these things or not do them. I had the opportunity so I took it. Zero regrets.

Defacing? I can see where that would be a problem for some people, but I plan looking at this guitar when I'm 80 and still have it, and remembering the times I've played it. I planned on that before the signature anyways. I'm glad he signed it in my name too, for that same reason. Regardless, if it's resale value you're talking about, rethink the signature or think of a way to wipe it off.

Signing on the back is not disrespectful. He actually told me it made a lot of sense, because he doesn't want to see something he's signed be put up and not touched only because it has his signature. Pickguard, it would get scratched, most places on the body, front or back are exposed to a lot of wear over many years, whether it's belt rash or forearm rubbing. The back of the headstock is the most logical place to me. I can see it when I want, it serves its purpose sentimentally, and it doesn't scream "hey guess what" at everyone looking at my guitar from the front.

That signature was two years ago. Really no preparation done to the headstock for the signature, plain old sharpie, no clearcoat afterwards. Been gigging it for two years since then and it still looks the same. Hey, if it fades or scratches, at least I know it once was there. If not, all the better. If you've seen the thread on my new Voodoo strat, yes I have stopped gigging the signed one, but it's not a signature wear issue. I'm afraid of theft, not only because of the signature, but because the guitar is significant to me regardless of that.

Nice job on the John Mayer sig. It would not have been my choice, but I still would file it under "pretty cool". I know he generates some hate and discontent from others in this forum ... but not from me. Sweet.
