As long as you understand that 99.9% of autographs you get on your guitar will likely decrease the resale value and that's not a concern if you plan on keeping it for yourself, I say go for it. And I agree that the back of the headstock is the right place.

Now, as far as getting a photo, absolutely. Just make sure you're wearing your Fender Forum T-shirt!

Okay, here is my two cents...

1) When a guitar is autographed, it should only be boldly signed on the main body of the guitar. If you want them to sign "somewhere else", that is a sign that maybe they shouldn't really be signing it all. Asking someone to autograph the back of the headstock is kinda an insult to whoever you ask to sign there.

2) The only time a guitar should be autographed is if the guitar player has some association to it, either by signature line or previous ownership. For instance, having Les Paul sign a Gibson LP or Eddie Van Halen sign a Wolfgang or one of Eddie's "art series" guitars would be pretty cool. Also - continuing my "for instance" - having Jimmy Vaughn or Dave Murray sign one of their signature Strats would likewise be very cool. But - other than that - have whoever sign a picture and put it on your wall.

I didn't really think about it that way. I just figured it was the safest place for it.

If he did sign the body, would a clear coat protect it well enough from minor scratches?

I don't have one of his artist series Strats, but I wish I did. I can't afford one right now. Mine's just a plain old Mexican Standard. And now it's probably not hard to guess who I've been talking about since there are only so many people with artist series Fenders...

That's a very well made point.

Extremely good value at two cents!

Cheers - C

Hey texasguitarslinger, I have a JV strat (am I getting warm?) and by his own design, his Artist Signature is on the back of the headstock. I don't think he'd be offended if you asked him to sign your guitar there.

Oh, and if I'm off base with this comment, just pretend this post never happened

I will neither confirm nor deny... But the JV Strat is actually where I got the idea of the signature behind the headstock like that. And that's also why I didn't think it about it being taken as something offensive.

Well if you do decide to get him to sign your guitar. As soon as he is done, quickly grab the marker, or whatever you use back, and sign his guitar. Tell him in 20 years your sig will be worth more!!

Ditto! If you can, have that photo taken with the artist and the guitar with signed pickguard. Replace the pickguard and nicely frame it along with the photo.

As an aside, a surgeon I know also had the good fortune to see Les Paul at the Iridium, brought a Gibson LP along with him, and had Les photographed signing it. .

Now the guitar is out of service permanently, rendered to 'work of art' status along with the pics.

Might that be Tea House of The Rising Sun, then?? A joint off-shore venture, perhaps?

Impressive list of luminaries there? What was the occasion of the signing?

Doc

Hi Doc , it was a gift that was purchased at a auction ,the bull share of the sigs were picked up at the crossroads fest in Chi. a couple of years ago ,the rest came from a G3 show , and a couple of random encounters while on display at Miami Airport,
as far as the next gig is concerned we are looking at several locations but are in no big hurry ,I still teach at the community college, and we did pretty good at the T-room, I may wait till Sept no use doing anything in tucson in the summer, when it rolls out you guys will know.

Thats what I do! I just take a PG with me - its much easier than dragging a guitar around at a show!

Interesting history there. Looking forward to hearing about your next venture.

BTW: What department do you teach in?

Hey Gratz cool guitar.....if it winds up missing though.......
Just teasing, I also live in Tucson.

I got an autograph from a guitar player I liked years ago. I really wanted him to sign this electric because it was my first and only electric. He signed with a black Sharpie on a red guitar. I had him sign the back because I wanted to play it and was afraid to scratch the front. I took it to a local music repair and had them clear coat the signature. I never used the guitar though, now have a strat. It was a junky low-end Ibanez. I still have the guitar (I never get rid of autographs) and the clear coat still looks great.
