The other guitarist in my band is interested in obtaining one of these. We looked at the Boss me 50 and me70.
Along with the multi effects he would like one with recording capabilities.

I would be much obliged if anyone could offer some advice on multi effects pedalboards or perhaps even recommend one.
Thanks

Hi Paulie: I'm the sort of complacent bastard that has several rigs for different rooms in the house and different locations (always nice to be able to plug in in the downstairs bathroom, for instance - or in the garden). So in addition to many pedals and an old Boss GT-3 I also happen to have a Boss ME-50 running into a small practice amp.

You may get sniffy comments from others on this kind of unit, and to be sure it don't compare to a row of well chosen individual pedals. On the other hand, these MEs give incomparable bang for the buck, and at the very least are a good springboard for later moves into serious pedal aquisitions.

For example, that ME-50 gives 22 drive pedal emulations. No doubt they don't quite compare to the real thing, but it's a nice way of covering a lot of ground and getting your ears thinking about the differences between the famous pedal names.

Also, if you already like your amp tone and so don't want amp and cab simulations then this is an excellent choice. On many multi-FX units with amp emulations you can't switch the sims off even if you want to, which can be a pain.

The ME-70 obviously offers more features for a bigger price: you must make your own judgements on that.

Not quite sure what you mean by needing a unit with "recording capabilities". If you need a recorder with multi-FX then that's a whole other ballgame.

If you're talking about connectivity, then neither of these MEs has USB. If that's a requirement then take a look at the Boss GT units, Vox Tonelabs (the new Tonelab ST is a comparable price) and the bewildering range of offerings from Line 6. Of course, all of those are amp modellers too, which may contradict your needs. Though for recording you may want the amp sims after all.

Oh, one more thing. Neither of these MEs comes with a mains adaptor. You have to buy Boss's dedicated PSA socket adaptor seperately - which is just plain silly. Nobody runs these sort of boxes on batteries...

Any use?

Cheers - C

EDIT; spelling...

Digitech makes an RP series with USB, but I haven't tried or heard them.

I have a Korg AX3000 which is nice, but no USB.

I also have a Korg Pandora PX5D which is a smaller footprint than the AX3000 and does have USB along amp/cab and pickup modeling.

I know some people who use these for "live" gigs and go straight into the board (no amps) such as my friends here from Brazil :

You can hear them using it on our Sky Ska collab and see the videos with no amps!

Good luck in your search!

thank you

very helpful so far.

By recording I think he may mean being able to lay down a riff and then play over it

Hi again: that's a looper. The ME-70 has up to 38 seconds of looping. The ME-50 doesn't.

The PX5D has up to 80 seconds of looping.

Audio samples on right side. (around $250)

The Digitech Rp350 i got on friday seems to have a lot going for it at its price. Computer editing for real fine tuning, midi and usb capabilities, you can turn the amp or/and speaker modelling off at will. A plethoria of pedals including a good octavia, whammy and even univibe sounds (im very critical over those 3 in particular), channel switching on selected amp even pre/post input pedal placement selection and a drum machine. It also comes with cubase le4 at the moment, all for £130. Very good sounds for not much money. I'm planning on gigging mine and will be making my mind up on that in about 4 hours at rehearsal.

The GNX series and the 2101 are the daddies of the digitech range. If he's feeling flush get him to spring for one of them.

Line 6 now makes a stomp-box modeler that does not include any amp simulation. I've played through one and it's my next purchase: the best sounding, most flexible, easily programmed mutlieffects I've seen. It's called the M13 and retails for 500USD.

http://line6.com/m13/

What's really hot about the M13 is the ability to not only change the order of the effect, but to choose what kind of effect each stage is producing at any time. That is to say, you're not stuck choosing a delay in your delay stage, and a distortion in your distortion stage... any button can be anything you want. Wanna stack up a compressor and four different delays in a chain? Knock yourself out. It's like an endlessly flexible pedal board that you can reconfigure on the fly using your choice of over 75 different classic stompboxes and outboard pieces, plus a 28-second looper always available.

I liked my ME-50 okay, although about half of it was unusable to my ear... but this thing is dope. I'm starting a new band this summer, and I'm using a Strat, my Egnater Rebel and an M13... a tiny, light rig that will do virtually anything.
