Hello All,

I revently gained some interest in
Hawiaan Slack Key style guitar playing.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uunrg3Xu ... re=related.

Well I was wondering, any of our forum members play this style?
Any suggestion on instructional material?

I've done some searches but haven't a clue what
material might be the best to get.

If anyones got a clue, many thanks in advance.

Cheers.

I'm no master, but I've done some very "slack key" sounding things for clients.

It's basically this:

An acoustic guitar, tuned to one of a set of open tunings (an open "G" is common, but there are lots of slack tunings), played with that alternating thumb bass style known as "double thumbing" or Travis picking. Slack key playing is characterized by the kinds of things you'd expect in Hawaiian music... lots of hammer-ons, pull-offs and slides up or down to target notes. The "slack" tuning and loopy left-hand style give slack key its "lazy tropics" sound.

Dancing Cat Records doens't just sell records of the music, they've got lots of inforamtion about tunings and playing styles ont heir website. Check 'em out.

Hello Ceri & SlapChop,

I think next weekend I'll pick up some
instructional material{DVD & book}.
Much of this Slack key stuff seems fairly
doable and quite pleasent sounding.

No interest in becomming a master of this
style of playing, just good enough to get some
grass skirts movin.

Cheers.
