depends on how much money you are willing to spend, epiphone les pauls are cheaper than gibson, so to put it up against a american std strat, i would go all out on the strat.

It all depends on which model of the Fender strat and what kind of sound you are looking for. Not a black and white question.

I suggest you go play all the guitars in your price range and decided which one you like best.

the Strat is a standard not an American standard, an MIM. the LP is an Epiphone Les Paul 100. The Strat is has been customized and its looking great...but LPs are cool too.
LP= $300
Strat=$350

i wouldnt be able to choose, i like em both, each has a special place in music and has individual strengths. nothing can spank like a single coil, but then nothing is so warm and smooth as a humbucker.

but yea it really depends on what sound is "you", as was mentioned.

maybe you'd like P90's, they're a good compromise between both worlds

$300 for an LP 100? That price is high for a bolt neck LP.

price shouldnt be an issue, i always say you get what you pay for.

Epiphone is a great brand of guitar, i have a iommi sg because i loved the sound and gave me and i use that one for drop d alot.

also i wouldnt call it battle of the guitars as i said above epiphone is like a squire is a sense.

The mim is a great piece of guitar too, i have a mim tele and it plays like a charm.

Save up and get them both if you can. If you can only get one i'd go with the strat because it can be upgraded easier and it will probably be easier to play of the two. Then again it's up to you and how you like the feel and tone of each one which is a big difference.

well as a rule L's will have a fatter, darker tone than a fender. Fender will have a bright twangy sound, so it depends on the sound you want. Both have bluesy sounds, it depends on whether you want a fat blues sound or a twangy one. It's really based on personal preference.

Both guitars are great for Blues.. The Gibson has a warmer creamer Joe Bonamassa tone to it while the strat can do bigger bends and be (at least IMO, more expressive). I don’t think you can go wrong either way, that’s why I have both…If it were me I would look at the SG. You kinda get the best of both there the gibson warm tone and the light gig-able weight of a strat… Just remember that Gibson clean tones aren’t that clean, kinda’ muddy due to the hum bucker and the shorter scale neck. Sounds like you need to get on down there and do yourself a shoot out to see what you really like….Remember advise is free but experience is priceless…..go try them both, pick one and please let us know what you come out with.

Bill

that's a very subjective question, and can't be answered. both guitars have served as staples in blues.

again, its what you like more.

some examples to consider...

LP bluesmen = luther allison
joe bonamassa (most of the time)
popa chubby (in earlier years)
Clapton (in earlier years, though the SG tends to be
featured, but in fact he has used a LP. either way sound is
almost same.)
Warren Haynes
Duane Allman

like i said, SG and LP sound very similar due to the pickups being pretty much same. therefore, bear in mind some guys used other guitars like BB King on the Lucille, Nugent on the Byrdland, Albert King on the Flying V, Billy Gibbons on various axes, normally with humbuckers

strat bluesmen (other than the usual obvious names) =
Buddy Guy
Mato Nanji
Henry Garza
Kenny Wayne

i'm actually getting annoyed by the strat blues players though, because it all the sounds the same to me now. seems they all try to emulate that same Hendrix SRV sound
