Sometimes, creativity comes from people who can think out of the box. Not knowing how to read and write music frees you to explore music in a more personal way. Sometimes you hit the jackpot, sometimes you don't. Hendrix did.

Sure he couldn't read or write sheet music, but he could play by ear as well as anyone. Jimi might not have known the note he was playing was a B or a C, but he sure as hell knew what he wanted it to sound like. As Jimi put it, he'd hear sounds in his head, and if he didn't get them nobody else would.

I had a roomate in college who told me he thought Jimi hendrix was overrated because he couldn't read or write music. I also had a friend who studied music and did not know this about Hendrix until I told him (a few years after the fact)

Let's not jump on Chet about this thread, he always has something relvant to post, maybe he wants us to post Hendrix facts also. I'll mill it over and see if I can find a good one.

He still made better records and performed better "live" than most guitarists that can read music (in my humble opinion).

I always wondered if Jimi could read or write music, so I'm grateful to Chet for posting this fact.

But like the majority of people here have stated, one doesn't need to know how to read or write music to be a great musician. Jimi sure turned the guitarist and music world upside down with his creations--and thank God for that!! :P

I watched a show on the Ovation Channel last night about Jimi Hendrix coming to the U.S. for the Monterey Pop Festival and the host mentioned that Jimi could not read or write music and it just stuck in my head. I had not remembered ever hearing that fact and thought I would share it.

yea hendrix supposedly thought of music as object or color oriented. he used to tell his session musicians in studio stuff like "make it sound like the ocean"

have to admit it was probably the drugs talking in his music half the time

A factoid I like about Hendrix is that his full name was James Marshall Hendrix. That middle name tells me what I need to know!

Another curious factoid on the same lines is that his name at birth was Johnny Allen Hendrix. His father changed it later to James Marshall in memory of his deceased brother, Leon Marshall Hendrix.

And his childhood nickname was Buster, not Jimi.

Complicated, huh?

Cheers - C
