It's very hard but it's totally worth it.

It's not as hard as playing acoustic strength wise, but guitar knowledge wise (chords, scales, etc.) they're basically the same.

If you have never played be prepared for the first couple of weeks to actualy be kind of painful as you will more than likely develop sore finger tips and some blisters but this passes fast as you toughen up your fingers. The rest after that is up to you on how far or good you want to be. If you take to it then it will be hard to even put it down as any guitarist here will tell you. Just remember it is about music and having fun and is not a competition.

What's an interweb? :D

And yes playing guitar can be hard. However learning the basics can actually be fairly easy.

Things start to get hairy as you progress.

I don't know how I stuck with it... I didn't have a nice guitar when I first started. I had this little acoustic that I suspect my Dad bought me at Sears. The action was very high, and although my fingers didn't bleed they were sore every night.

Even playing badly is difficult to achieve...

playing guitar isn't hard, just takes some getting used to. start out slow, 10 to 15 minutes at a time. then when you really get into it and have your hands conditioned you won't want to put the guitar down.

best advice is to take your time. don't rush things and take a lot of rests while playing. its better to start playing for six 10 minute periods than one 60 minute period. once you play for a while it will be like surfing the internet. i can pick up a guitar and when i check the time a few hours have passed by and it only seems like an hour at the most. sorta like surfing the net. start typing and an hour goes by really fast.

most important thing is to have fun.

Gear is very important.

Don't rush and buy a cheapo guitar because you want to get started NOW. Starting on a crap instrument can burn you out on guitar fast.
Make sure you have enough cash for a decent guitar.

Mid level Squiers are nice and fairly inexpensive. Any of the Made in Mexico Fenders is a good choice too (but they cost a bit more).

In my opinion Telecasters are more "forgiving" guitars than Stratocasters. Teles will let you mess up a little and still sound good. A Strat lets you know right away when you fudge something.

Playing electric guitar is a lot more fun than it is difficult.

Getting really good is elusive, unless you are a prodigy, but how to know unless you give it a go?

Best of fortune!

Is it hard to paint a painting? Is it hard to drive a car? Is it hard to learn kung-fu? Depends on how detailed you want to be, how fast you want to drive, how hard you want to punch, etc... Don't expect to reach a desired level of skill in a month, or a year, or hell even a lifetime, just practice. If you go in on your first day trying to play Eruption, yeah it'll be as hard as trying to smash a cinder block in half with your fist (albeit less painful). I'll use the quote from Dodgeball: I find if you lower your expectations, you never leave disappointed :P
