I guess a happy groan is the appropriate response to that, isn't it? :D

When I was stationed at RAF Chicksands (Shefford, Bedfordshire) back in the early '90s, the base leadership didn't want to offend our British hosts by celebrating Independence Day. So the 4th of July was "Airman Appreciation Day," which was celebrated on base with barbecue, baseball and fireworks!

Don't worry, we've long since got over it. Been places, done a lot of stuff since 1776: we've moved on...

Actually, in the little rural village where I spend half my time there lives an American couple. Every 4th July they put on a party; beer, hotdogs, fireworks and the rest. It's all most neighborly and friendly - I think our two nations get on pretty well, don't we?

Barbeque with friends and family and the possibility of fireworks at night. I'll try to play it by ear... Get it? Play by ear?

Not much for me -- BBQ at home with friends, wine to go with it and then the "free" (if not entirely legal) fireworks display the kids in the 'hood put on out in the street.

Acrobatics come with the show ... as in ... when LAPD turns the corner, they scatter into the front yards fast. But once the car reaches the other end of the block, out they come again.

Hi Bill: indeed! We fell about laughing at first because we thought she was joking. But she wasn't.

Being a good Irish woman she could hardly think of anything more wicked than throwing tea in the sea. She was obviously a touch hazy on her history, but she felt certain that if anyone was going to do a terrible thing like that it must surely be those perfidious English. It must have been their fault...

My family and I are heading to my brothers log cabin on northern Wisconsin were we will enjoy the following, in no particular order:

Bar B Que, jumping off the pontoon boat in the middle of the lake (kid favorite), fishing for the ever elusive northern pike, campfire, four wheeling, early morning golf (thats me!!), good food, outdoor movie on the side of the cabin...with fire going and cabin neighbors stopping by with treats, cribbage, smores, popcorn, spicy horseradish, and the list goes on.................

yeeeeeesssssssssirrrrrrrrr!!!!!!

Morning: take the wife and four dogs out on the boat into the Gulf to a local island/sandbar. The idea is to wear the hounds out before the fireworks start.

Afternoon: grill or smoke what ever we catch (or, go to the grocery, water temp is in the high 80's).

Evening: a few adult beverages and watch the local fireworks from the dock with some neighbors (the aforementioned dogs can't be left unattended or I would return to rubble). A couple of neighborhood "kids" (20-ish) play, maybe an acoustic jam will develop.

A happy and safe Independence Day to all. Remember why we do it.
