This is kind of an off-shoot of my last post and it got me thinking. You can't deny the guy is a heck of a player, but what are your thoughts on John Mayer. I am not digging the "playboy' tabloid thing that seems to be going on with him and on some songs I don't really care for his voice but over all I'd definitely consider myself at least a casual fan of his.

Hes a very good player. He has been putting out stuff that is way better than whats been going out recently. I consider myself a fan. Check out his Where the Light Is cd/dvd. Great set with the John Mayer Trio

Although he does all this crap pop stuff you can tell deep down all he really wants to play is the blues and I can respect that. So I said yes

Agreed. I can dig the pop in short bits, but I saw a Youtube video with him playing with Eric Clapton, and Mayer played the blues very well, so I respect the guy. And outside of music, he's a really cool dude, from the interviews I've seen and read.

honestly i dont see very much in him, and only for this. he just sounds like every other strat player. we already had hendrix and SRV, now we should have Mayer, not Stevie Hendrivaughan.

and next to that, he's just some bubble gum girl toy playing the sensitive card.

great blues licks, i'll give him that, but he's not genuine. i feel like he's in it for the glamour

I’m a fan to a degree in that I have heard him really tear loose on some great Blues stuff. He really is a very good player. That being said most of the stuff he does is too POP for me and not as guitar oriented as I think it should be for what I have see him play from time to time. I like his stuff from time to time if I catch it on the radio or a crossroads video; but again too Pop for me

It seems he spends too much time (IMO) on worrying about how he looks on entertainment Television with whatever Hottie chick he has landed this month.

Just my two cents
Cheers
Bill

Frankly, I never heard of him until his signature guitar came out. Naturally, I gave several listens because everyone was praising this guy to the hills. I didn't get it then and still don't now. IMO, his music is a crashing bore overall and his guitar playing talents are no better or worse than the next guy's. He's more than extremely lucky to be where he is both musically and FWIW, romantically. YMMV.

He is hard to figure out. When he first hit he sounded like he wanted to be Dave Mathews it was like he ripped him off but I did take notice his chord voicings were pretty complex. Then I saw him doing blues with Buddy Guy and I read an article where he said that was what he wanted to do all along but could not till he got his foot in the door, which I can believe. I bought his album with the trio and it was OK nothing out of the ordinary and a lil tame for my taste. I deffinetly dig Kenny Waynes playing over his by a long stretch.Theres this clip of Mayer doing Panama and playing a Wolfgang on youtube, he is not singing just playing and its good but it shows you how amazing Eddie is running and junping on stage with the guitar like a third arm as when Mayer tries to bounce around and play he is stiff which is no fault of his but you hardly see another famous player doing a Vanhalen song as you are going to think of Eddie. But to sum him up he is good but like Martian said I dont know how he has an artist series guitar .Would anyone be able to hear someone playing and go thats a Mayer lick.
