Not unusual for CBS era to take some cost cutting corners. Although, I have a few CBS era myself and cant complain about the quality.

I mentioned the use of E4 serial number decals well into the late '80s! (Because production was very low.)

That so-called '70's logo was used well into the '80s.

What I see in those pictures is a nice example of a hardtail "Smith" Stratocaster. It could be a 1982, but more likely a 1983 (based on the high serial number). I don't see anything wrong with it.

My other guitar is a Strat.

The bullet truss rod adjustment and big headstock remained through 1979. Also the serial numbers were engraved on the neckplate as far as I remember. My 72 says something like "Custom Contour Body" on the headstock. I seriously doubt it's a 70's Strat.

Still a nice looking guitar and nothing wrong with it. It's just not from the 70's.
