I've been a Fender guy since the late 70's. Usually Strats but the occasional Tele too. Other guitars have come and gone, but I always seem to end up back with Fender.

For years I have thought about getting a Les Paul (the OTHER iconic electric guitar) y'know, for something different. A couple of weeks ago, I picked up a used Les Paul standard Plus Top (albeit an Epipnhone not a Gibson). The price was right, it's darned pretty (Trans Amber finish on a nicely matched flame maple) and it sounds really nice; it just doesn't "do it for me" like my Strats (or my Tele).

Sigh I guess I'll just have to stick to what I know.

Gonna have to put it up on Ebay.

I have an LP, Strat, and Tele. I love them equally. Usually, I keep one out of its case for weeks at a time, then back it goes into its case for weeks and then I fall in love with my other guitar(s) all over again. Right now, my Gibson LP is in use every day while my Stratocaster and Telecaster are enjoying their much deserved rests.

Try to see if the Les Paul grows on you a little. They've got their personal advanges just like strats/teles do; it sounds like you're just used to the perks your old guitars had.

maybe I will hang on to it for a bit longer. Like I said, it's a nice guitar. Maybe it will grow on me.

Les Pauls are great guitars, to be sure. Nobody can really argue that. They don't really do it for me for a number of reasons, the main one being that they just don't feel right to me.

Tone - yeah it's nice, but it's a generic humbucker tone to me. I have an old Peavey Tracer with a Dimarzio Pro Paf on it and a Kahler locking, modded a lot. It's my metal guitar that I rarely play. I can get a great Les Paul tone from it through my Mesa that even a true Les Paul user couldn't distinguish, since most of the tone comes from the amp anyway. As in, a Les Paul, into my Mesa, same settings, won't sound much different (if any).

But if you got one, keep it for a while, and play JUST that. Find your tone on it. It's there, though it might take you longer to find since you're used to a much different feeling and sounding guitar.

As you know I also just took the plunge into an LP, but it's working out just fine.

And I think I will give the opposite advice than everyone else here - with guitars, if it's right, you just know, and if it's not, I don't think time will make any difference. For example, my Gibson experience, there was this gorgeous very fancy LP that came into the shop where I take my lessons just before Christmas, at a good price. I tried it out and even sent a friend in for a second opinion, but it just didn't feel right, the shorter scale length bothered me, the strings felt loose, the ebony fretboard felt too hard, just overall like trying on a pair of shoes that didn't fit. Turns out my teacher bought it so now I see it all the time, and he loves it but it wasn't right for me.

And then a few weeks ago he pointed out the Special that had come in, an even better price, not necessary the LP I would have picked as I always thought I'd need a cherry sunburst finish, but immediately this one just felt right. The neck fits my hands, the body feels great, it's easy to play, it sounds great, and the finish makes me sigh with adoration every time I look at it. Love. And I just knew.

So I would say sell this one on and wait for The One to come along - it's out there, have faith!

Spot on Mike, I've made a few costly mistakes myself. The guitars I have now though, are all fantastic in their own right.
