So, on 1 June our youngest moved out, following her two elder sisters' examples. All had lived at home between 6 months and 2 years after completing university, but now we are empty-nesters.

And the largest of the girls' bedrooms became her po' ol' paw's (still under construction, Tiki lounge theme) music room (2nd largest is his study)...

...so the sadness of not having any more 'kids' at home is tempered by having a dedicated place for permanent setup of guitars and amps. And some seating. And a former-dorm fridge. Tres cool. And a bit sad.

'Dunno if this post is looking for sympathy or congrats....

I am both forlorn and overjoyed at this news.

My oldest just graduated high school and had plans to move away for college. This would have vacated the upstairs attic room he lives in that I have been "measuring the curtains" for my music room since he became a senior. Well, in a fit of good judgement, he decided to save up, stay at home and attend community college for awhile, so the music room is on hold. Shucks.

My parents turned mine into a box and junk repository, leaving just a path to my old bed for when I visited. They just left one of my brother's bedrooms "as it was" when he left for the Army 4 years after I left home. I don't think anyone ever used it again except when my mom would snore, my dad would go in there to sleep.

They sold the house about 6 months after my youngest brother left home and moved into a small 2 bedroom home. The second room there was sort of a small office/guest room -- we'd use then when visiting.

But in thinking about it, the empty nest thing was at work. My room was huge because it was intended as a family room (on the 1st floor). So boxes, books and you name it were piled up on one end. But on the other end, my bed, dresser and night stand were always clean and ready to go ... clock even always set to the right time ... years after i'd left home. It was as if time could reverse, the posters would reappear on the wall, my old Bassman amp in the corner and nothing had ever changed.

I hear you Brother. Watching you kids grow is both wonderful and saddening. They drive you nuts sometimes, but they are the reason you live.

The kids can come back to visit and the music room is cool. It sounds like a win-win situation.

Oh Wow a tiki music room. I love it. My 2 are still home but I like the idea of a themed music room. I'm thinking for me a car/Hot Rod themed music room.

I know when mine leave (19 and 15) I will have mixed emotions too.

Is it too early to give them the boot?

No.

Have you trained them to sweep chimneys? Remember what the Jesuits say: "Give me a child at seven - I'll give you a clean chimney at quarter past."

Time to start sweating your assets...

And to JSJH: every cloud, huh?

Cheers - C

I've teased my son about taking over his room for awhile now. In fact, if you ask him what he's getting for a high school graduation present, he'll tell you "a Uhaul trailer with all of my stuff loaded in it."

And whether I get the room or not is cause for debate between me and momma, she said something about moving my KISS museum in there as well, but there isn't that much space.

We'll see how it shakes out, he's gonna be a sophomore this year so there's a couple years to go.
